At noon on May 17, Hung found Mr. Son's phone number written on the documents inside the wallet, so he called, added him on Zalo, took pictures of the documents and sent them to Mr. Son, asking for 3 million VND to redeem the money.
Fearing that Hung would throw away important documents and use his personal information to commit illegal acts, Mr. Son agreed to redeem them for 1.5 million VND.
Then, at 1:00 a.m. on June 24, Hung shot and broke the window of the car with license plate 43A-24406 of Ms. Le Thi Nhu Phuong (residing in group 36, Hoa Tho Tay, Cam Le) and took the leather wallet containing the driver's license, vehicle registration, and vehicle inspection book.
Checking the wallet, he found a document with Ms. Phuong's phone number on it. Hung called, added her on Zalo, sent her a photo of the document and asked for 3 million VND to redeem it. Ms. Phuong asked to meet him in person to give him cash and get the document, and Hung agreed.
On June 25, Hung rode a motorbike carrying documents to Ms. Phuong's house to collect the ransom money but was caught red-handed by Cam Le District Police and taken to the headquarters for questioning.
During the investigation, Hung confessed to committing four other crimes in addition to the two above cases. Searching Hung’s residence, the police seized a motorbike with license plate 76F1-35491, a mobile phone, and many bank cards and vehicle registrations of the victims.
