The win made Sierra the first Argentinian to reach the third round of Wimbledon in 16 years. She is also the fourth "lucky loser" in history to reach the third round of the tournament.
Calling Sierra a "lucky loser" because she failed in the qualifying round and was supposed to stay home and watch Wimbledon 2025 on TV. But at the last minute, Belgian tennis player Greet Minnen had to withdraw due to injury, so Sierra was chosen as a replacement with an urgent announcement "must be on the court in 1 hour".
Sierra was eating at the tennis restaurant when she got the call. She had just 15 minutes to get dressed and warm up for five minutes before taking the court to face Australian Olivia Gadecki in the first round of the women's singles.
Despite not having much time to prepare, Sierra took advantage of her mental comfort to win against Olivia Gadecki with a score of 2-0 (6-2, 7-6). She then continued to surprise with a 2-1 victory over British female tennis player Katie Boulter, ranked 43rd in the world .
Sierra has pocketed £152,000 in prize money with her two wins. She will also break into the top 80 for the first time in her career. Speaking to the press, Sierra said: "After losing in qualifying, I was so upset and I watched the loss over and over again. Then they said I was the lucky loser. It was a bit crazy but I was happy. I took the opportunity."
Sierra also revealed that she wants to use the prize money to buy a necklace. Sierra said: "I was interested in the necklace before but it was too expensive. Now I think I have enough money to buy it. However, I have a match with Cristina Bucsa ahead. I'm very happy and want to continue winning."
Sierra previously reached the junior semifinals at the 2021 US Open and the final at Roland Garros 2022. She joined the Rafa Nadal academy in March and is currently in London with academy coach Miguel Fragoso.
Sierra hopes that her relaxed spirit and luck will help her continue to make surprises at Wimbledon 2025.
