During the meeting between Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov and Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Foreign Economic Relations Mehdi Safari in Tehran, the two sides discussed BRICS activities in the fields of economy-trade, energy, agriculture, science-technology, environment, sports-culture, and many other fields.

Mr. Safari affirmed that Iran is determined to play an active role in the diverse activities of BRICS, and assured that his ministry will make every effort to play an effective and constructive role in the organization. For his part, Mr. Ryabkov congratulated Iran on its recent admission to the group, and outlined the priorities of Russia’s 2024 BRICS chairmanship.

BRICS is a group of emerging economies that currently includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. In August, the 15th BRICS Summit in South Africa announced that six countries – Iran, Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) – were invited to join the bloc, with their membership effective January 1, 2024.
