Benefits of “smart roofs”

(Baothanhhoa.vn) - With high heat radiation intensity and an average annual sunshine of over 2,000 hours, Thanh Hoa is one of the six northern provinces with great potential for developing rooftop solar power. In the context of increasing energy demand, fluctuating grid electricity prices and urgent requirements for green energy transition, rooftop solar power is becoming a solution that many businesses and households are interested in and proactively investing in.

Benefits of “smart roofs”

Many "smart roofs" at Dinh Huong Industrial Park - Tay Bac Ga help businesses proactively manage energy sources and save costs.

With only over 70 million VND invested in a 3.4kW rooftop solar power system installed on the terrace roof, Ms. Nguyen Thi Phuong's family (Hac Thanh ward) has both effectively protected against the heat instead of using corrugated iron roofing and significantly saved on electricity costs. According to the monitoring system since its installation (2019) to date, her family has saved nearly 40 million VND. Ms. Phuong shared that this system helps reduce electricity costs by about 1 - 1.5 million VND/month, especially during peak summer times, the proactive use of solar power ensures the family's daily needs are met, without worrying about power outages when there is an overload from the grid.

Not only bringing clear benefits to households, many businesses are also clearly aware of the efficiency and initiative that rooftop solar power brings. In the agricultural sector, Thai Duong Thanh Hoa Solar Power Joint Stock Company has integrated a solar power system into a high-tech pig farming model that consumes a significant amount of electricity. The company representative said that thanks to the installation of a rooftop solar power system to operate machinery during the day, the farm's energy costs have been cut by about 70% per month, contributing to improving production efficiency and increasing competitiveness in the market.

In industry, Manh Dai Phat Investment and Development Company Limited also invested in a rooftop solar power system of nearly 1MWp, connected to the grid for shared use with the garment factory's power system. Thanks to that, during the hot summer this year, the company has saved from 80 to 150 million VND per month on electricity bills, significantly reducing the pressure on production costs in the context of rising grid electricity prices.

According to data from Thanh Hoa Electricity Company, the whole province currently has 613 rooftop solar power projects with a total installed capacity of 66.8MWp, connected to the national grid before December 31, 2020 according to Decision No. 13/2020/QD-TTg of the Prime Minister on the mechanism to encourage the development of solar power in Vietnam. Rooftop solar power has many outstanding advantages such as being a clean energy source, not causing environmental pollution, contributing to encouraging the development of a green economy . The investment and construction costs are also very reasonable, quick and simple. Not only saving on the cost of purchasing grid electricity, this is also a solution that businesses and people accompany the electricity industry to reduce peak load pressure during peak hours at noon, supporting the stable operation of the national power system.

It is forecasted that electricity demand in 2025 and the following years will continue to increase thanks to the economic recovery and development. Thanh Hoa Electricity Company estimates that commercial electricity output in 2025 will reach 9.02 billion kWh, an increase of 16.08% over the same period. While new supply from factories has not been improved, the development of self-produced and self-consumed rooftop solar power is considered a necessary and effective solution to proactively source energy and reduce pressure on the grid.

In order to promote the development of renewable energy sources, on March 3, 2025, the Government issued Decree No. 58/2025/ND-CP detailing a number of articles of the Electricity Law on the development of renewable energy. This Decree not only provides incentive mechanisms, but also sets out specific regulations to optimize the development of clean energy sources. In particular, the Decree allows rooftop solar power systems that produce and consume electricity themselves to sell their surplus electricity output to electricity buyers at a rate of no more than 20%, including the electricity output stored in the electricity storage system, if any.

According to solar power supply and installation enterprises, entering this summer, the demand from households has increased significantly compared to previous years. According to Mr. Le Quang Tien, Director of New Era Technology Company Limited, by mid-2025, the unit has supplied and deployed more than 400 solar power systems with a total capacity of over 55MWp, providing customers with smart solutions, optimizing investment costs but still ensuring high efficiency. With the current installation price reduced by 30-40% compared to before, the payback period shortened to only 3-5 years, the demand for learning about and installing solar power at the unit has increased by about 300% compared to last year. However, he also recommended that state management agencies soon approve the unit price for selling electricity to the national grid for the 20% surplus output to encourage more households and businesses to be interested and bold in investing in this model.
