Houthis claim responsibility for attack on ship in Red Sea

MSC Mediterranean Shipping said the crew of the United VIII was not injured in the attack while the ship was traveling from Saudi Arabia to Pakistan. The company said the ship reported being attacked by a coalition warship and took evasive action.

In addition, the Israeli government also said that its military aircraft intercepted a hostile target in the Red Sea area.

Houthi spokesman Yahya Sarea said in a televised address that the group attacked the ship, which he identified as the MSC United, after the crew failed to respond to warnings.

He also said the Houthis had launched a military campaign against Eilat and other areas in Israel, which he said were occupied Palestinian territory. He did not say which targets had been successfully attacked.

US Central Command said fighter jets, a Navy destroyer and other US assets in the Red Sea shot down 12 drones, three anti-ship ballistic missiles and two cruise missiles launched by the Houthis. There were no reports of damage or casualties on X, the department said.

The Houthis, who control much of Yemen, including the country's capital, have since October attacked commercial vessels in the Red Sea that they say are linked to Israel or headed to Israel, in support of the Palestinian people in the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza.

The UK Maritime Trade Operations Authority had earlier reported two explosions in the Red Sea off the coast of Yemen involving several missiles and drones. The agency also said there were no casualties in these incidents.

The incidents were reported a week after the US announced a multinational maritime security proposal in the Red Sea in response to attacks on ships there by Yemen's Houthis.

Many shipping routes have been shut down in the Red Sea in response to Houthi attacks and navigation through Africa.

The Houthis have pledged to continue attacks until Israel ends its conflict in Gaza and have warned they will target US warships if they are targeted.
