Ms. Tran Thi Mac always cares about and teaches students about studying and speaking.
Fate with the Highlands
Born into a family with a revolutionary tradition, her father was a martyr, love for her homeland and country was deeply ingrained in Tran Thi Mac's blood. Growing up, she participated in revolutionary activities, transporting food to soldiers fighting in Truong Son.
After the country was reunified, she returned to live and work in her hometown, actively participating in movements and activities organized by the locality. In particular, for over 30 years, Ms. Mac has always been willing to help students from the highlands, especially the Van Kieu ethnic group, to go to the plains to study. She has accepted students to stay for free, creating conditions for them to study.
According to Ms. Mac, the reason she did that was because when she was young, she spent time in Truong Son commune trading and doing business with the Van Kieu people, so she understood the difficulties of the people here.
Mrs. Tran Thi Mac shared: "At that time, I often bought rice, fish sauce, salt, food... to bring to Truong Son commune by going upstream on Long Dai river, crossing Tam Lu waterfall to sell to the people here. During such trips, I heard the people here confide about the difficulties and shortages they encountered, especially the students going downstream to study in difficult traffic conditions, difficult family circumstances...".
Having also grown up in hardship, Mrs. Mac deeply understands and shares the hardships that the students of Truong Son commune have to go through. She discussed with her husband and son and decided to take care of and provide free accommodation for the students who come to study in the lowlands. Since then, the small house at the end of the alley of Mrs. Mac and her husband have always been filled with laughter and love.
In recognition of Ms. Tran Thi Mac's meaningful and deeply humane work in recent times, many organizations and localities have awarded her certificates of merit and rewards. Notably, in June 2025, Ms. Mac was honored to receive a certificate of merit from the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee; she was one of the typical women recognized by the Provincial Women's Union as a typical example in the period 2020-2025. |
Warm family love
The joy was short-lived, in 2007, tragedy struck Mrs. Mac's family when both her husband and son passed away. In her most sorrowful and depressed moments, Mrs. Mac was encouraged and comforted by the students who were by her side. It was the students who motivated Mrs. Mac to overcome the loss and pain and continue living.
Up to now, Mrs. Mac has spent more than 30 years taking care of students from Truong Son commune to study in the lowlands and staying for free in her family's small house. She always loves, protects, and considers her children as her own children. Every day, she goes to the market to cook for the whole family, and teaches her children good words and right things in life.
The relationship between Ms. Tran Thi Mac and her boarding students are like that of family members.
Vo Ngoc Tan, a 12A1 student at Quang Ninh High School, spent 3 years studying for free at Mrs. Mac's house. This was a time filled with affection for Tan. Vo Ngoc Tan emotionally said: "I feel very lucky and extremely grateful to have Mrs. Mac help me and let me stay for free during my high school years. During my time here, she often advised me and my friends to study, and took care of every meal and sleep. I consider her as a grandmother in the family. After completing the high school graduation exam, away from her, I will always remember this warm and loving home."
Throughout her life, Mrs. Mac has quietly nurtured “green shoots”, helping to give wings to the dreams of many students who have grown up and passed the entrance exams to professional schools as they wished. Currently, many students have graduated and are working, dedicating their strength and intelligence to building a prosperous village. Although life is still difficult and her health is getting worse, Mrs. Mac still silently helps and supports students in difficult circumstances to have a peaceful place to eat and live during their studies.
"Up to now, I have helped more than 50 students stay for free in my family to study. Last school year, 4 students studied at Quang Ninh High School and lived in my family. Of these, 2 students have just completed their high school graduation exams and graduated. They all have difficult family circumstances, very pitiful. They see me as their grandmother, so although life is difficult, I always try to take care of them in the best possible conditions. Thanks to that, my house is always filled with laughter," Ms. Mac confided.
In addition to taking care of and supporting high school students in the mountainous areas of Truong Son commune, Ms. Mac is also an active Party member and Women's Union member. Despite her advanced age, thanks to her enthusiasm for work, she has always been an exemplary model in implementing the Party's guidelines and policies, the State's policies and laws, and local regulations.
In movements and activities, she always actively participates. Typically, in the campaign to build a "family of 5 no, 3 clean", she actively built her family to achieve 8/8 criteria, well implemented waste classification, built a green, clean, beautiful home landscape. In addition, she also regularly participates in club models established by the Women's Union of the commune. She herself actively mobilizes many elderly people to participate in women's activities and has many suggestions to help the village women's association operate more and more effectively...
Ms. Nguyen Thi Anh Hong, former President of the Women's Union of the old Xuan Ninh commune, said: "Ms. Mac is an exemplary female member in implementing emulation movements organized and launched by women's unions at all levels. Helping and taking care of students in Truong Son commune to stay for free is a deeply humane activity. This work has created more motivation for them to study well, thereby creating conditions for them to become useful for the country."
