The reason why star anise is considered a “treasure” given to Vietnam by heaven is because very few countries in the world can grow it. This flower is found in Vietnam and China. It has many health benefits.

According to the book Vietnamese medicinal plants and herbs by Professor Do Tat Loi, star anise is a medicinal herb used in both Eastern and Western medicine.

In Western medicine, star anise is a laxative that helps digestion, promotes lactation, and has effects on the nervous and muscular systems (pain relief, spasms relief) and is used for stomach pain. In addition, star anise is also used as an aperitif and to flavor toothpaste. However, if used in large quantities or in high doses, it can cause poisoning.

Doctor Le Ngoc Chau, University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City - Facility 3 said that star anise is not only a spice but also a medicine with many uses such as reducing intestinal motility, improving flatulence, bloating, indigestion, and increasing digestive secretions.

According to ancient documents, star anise has a spicy taste, warm properties, and affects the four meridians of the liver, kidney, spleen, and stomach. It has the effect of expelling cold, strengthening the spleen, stimulating appetite, and is used to treat vomiting, stomachache, bloating, and detoxification of meat and fish.

Star anise is often used as a medicine to help digestion, indigestion, vomiting, and rheumatism. Use 4 to 8g per day in decoction form. Use externally to soak in wine and massage to treat pain and rheumatism.

Doctor Ngoc Chau said that star anise is often used to prepare dishes with medicinal and health-enhancing properties. For example, stewed chicken with star anise helps reduce stomach cold, warms the body, and supports the spleen and stomach. Braised meat with star anise helps aid digestion and provides nutrition.

Star anise is also used to make tea to help reduce bloating and indigestion, stimulate digestion, and help women reduce menstrual cramps. Boil 2 star anise petals with 500ml of water and drink warm. You can add honey to enhance the flavor.

According to Dr. Ngoc Chau, star anise brings many health benefits if used properly. Absolutely do not abuse star anise. When using star anise for medical purposes, you should consult a specialist.

In addition, some of the following groups should not use star anise: people with syndromes related to yin deficiency and excess fire should not use it, pregnant or breastfeeding women should not use large amounts.

When using star anise, if it shows signs of mold, it should be discarded to avoid affecting health.
