Báo Dân tríBáo Dân trí05/01/2025

(Dan Tri) - Thailand national team coach Masatada Ishii said he has different scenarios ready for the second leg of the 2024 AFF Cup final, including a penalty shootout with the Vietnamese team.
In response to the Thai media, coach Masatada Ishii said that the scenario of the two teams having to take penalty kicks to determine the winner is a scenario that could happen in the second leg of the final tonight. Mr. Ishii has prepared for the penalty shootout scenario with the Vietnamese team.

In case Thailand wins Vietnam by one goal in the second leg of the final, the two teams will draw after two matches (Vietnam leads 2-1 in the first leg). Then, both sides will have to play extra time. If there are still no goals scored in the extra time, the match will be decided by a penalty shootout. Currently, Thailand has penalty specialists including Supachok Sarachat, Suphanat Mueanata, Ekanit Panya. However, it is difficult for all of these players to play the full 120 minutes of the two regular and two extra times. So it is unlikely that they will appear in the penalty shootout at the same time.

In addition to the above players, Thailand has striker Patrik Gustavsson and central midfielders Peeradol Chamrasamee and Weerathep Pomphan who are very cool in finishing. They may also be assigned to take penalty kicks, if they are still present on the field after 120 minutes of play. On the Vietnamese team side, coach Kim Sang Sik (Korean) has Xuan Son, Tien Linh, Quang Hai, Hoang Duc, Hai Long who are free kick specialists. We also have central defender Bui Tien Dung and right back Vu Van Thanh who are often assigned to take 11m penalty kicks at their clubs. Therefore, the Vietnamese team does not lack players who can take good penalty kicks. It is very likely that coach Kim Sang Sik has also considered the scenario of the match extending to a "shootout". In case the Vietnamese team wins or draws with Thailand in the second leg of the final, the match will end soon after 90 minutes of official play. The Vietnamese team will then soon win the championship cup.
