Principal speaks out about 2.5 points in three subjects for admission to 10th grade

On the afternoon of July 3, Mr. Pham Xuan Phu, Principal of Nam Dan 2 High School, Thien Nhan Commune, Nghe An Province confirmed that the school's second round of admissions standard score was 2.5 points. Meanwhile, the school's first round of admissions standard score was 9.5 points.

In the 2025-2026 school year, Nam Dan 2 High School was assigned by the Nghe An Departmentof Education and Training to enroll 450 students for 10 grade 10 classes. However, there were only 419 applications to take the entrance exam to the school, so the enrollment target was adjusted to 400.

After the 10th grade entrance exam, some candidates changed their wishes, resulting in 442 applications, so the school continued to adjust the enrollment quota to 450.

The school board planned the second round of benchmark scores to be 6.5 points or higher. However, there were only 5 students with scores below 6 points, including one with 2.5 points. Therefore, after discussion, the school board unanimously announced the benchmark score of 2.5 points.

“Because there is still a shortage compared to the enrollment quota, the school announced the second round of enrollment. According to the enrollment regulations, candidates who do not violate the exam regulations and do not have a failing score will have their scores taken from top to bottom, and each candidate will be accepted until the quota is met. With the second round of admission scores, there are 31 candidates who are eligible to be admitted, of which only one student scored 2.5 points,” said Mr. Phu.

Regarding the incident, Mr. Nguyen Trong Hoan, Chief of Office of the Department of Education and Training of Nghe An province, said that in the 2025-2026 school year, Nam Dan 2 High School was assigned the target of recruiting 450 10th grade students. The school recruited more than 400 students in the first round, of which the student with the highest score was 27.75 points. In the second round, the school was allowed to recruit 31 additional students, of which only one student had a score of 2.5.

Statistics show that the admission benchmark for grade 10 in Nghe An for the 2025-2026 school year has decreased compared to last year.

For example, Ha Huy Tap High School's admission score for the first round was 17.75 points, and for the second round it was 17.5 points, while the admission score for the 2024-2025 school year was 21 points. Le Viet Thuat High School's admission score was 15.25 points, 6.4 points lower than the previous school year (21.65 points for the first round). These are two schools located in favorable locations (old Vinh city).

For schools in rural areas such as Thai Lao High School, the benchmark score is 11.75 points, 7 points lower than the previous school year. Le Hong Phong High School is 10 points, 6.5 points lower than in 2024 - 2025...

This year’s 10th grade entrance exam in Nghe An was held over 2 days (June 3 and 4) with 3 subjects: Math, Literature and Foreign Language (English or French). The whole province has more than 39,000 candidates registered to take the exam at 69 public schools in the whole province.
