Winning the Gold Medal at the Abu Rayhan-Biruni International Chemistry Olympiad in 2025, Trinh Duc Anh, a 12th grade Chemistry major student at Vinh Phuc High School for the Gifted, has brought glory and pride to himself, his school and the provincial Department of Education and Training. That result is the crystallization of a long journey of perseverance, steadfastness and constant improvement by Trinh Duc Anh and the care and nurturing of his teachers and family.
With eyes sparkling with joy, teacher Tran Hoai Thu, one of the two teachers directly teaching and nurturing Duc Anh, said: “Duc Anh is a good, intelligent, careful, and highly determined student. He always strives and is creative in his studies, devoting all his passion to Chemistry. The gold medal at the Abu Rayhan-Biruni International Chemistry Olympiad that Duc Anh won has affirmed his ability, determination, will and love for Chemistry.”
Learning about Duc Anh's learning process, it is known that in the first 2 years of studying at Tam Hop Secondary School (Binh Xuyen), Duc Anh was an excellent student in Math. He was passionate about numbers, geometry and logical problems; always eager to find answers faster, better solutions. However, the turning point was in the 2020 - 2021 school year, the school did not organize a Math team for 8th grade students, teachers chose Duc Anh to join the Chemistry Excellent Student team.
With confidence and a desire to explore in-depth knowledge in a new subject, Duc Anh decided to change direction. In the first year of participating in the district-level Chemistry competition, he won second prize. In grade 9, he continued to participate in the Chemistry competition and won first prize at the district level and an encouragement prize at the provincial level.
In the 2022-2023 school year, Duc Anh passed the entrance exam to grade 10 of the Chemistry major at Vinh Phuc High School for the Gifted. At this high-quality school with a long history of national and international excellent student achievements, Duc Anh studied an intensive program, with a team of excellent and experienced teachers and many excellent students in the whole province.
To continuously improve, he has made a scientific study plan for himself. Considering teachers as guides and himself as having to go all the way to the horizon of knowledge, Duc Anh always seriously absorbs the lectures of teachers; at the same time, he promotes self-study ability and self-discipline.
I apply the Pomodoro method (study for 50 minutes, rest for 10 minutes) to stay focused and avoid exhaustion. I search for many sources of documents, learn from seniors, actively practice exam questions to improve knowledge, consolidate skills...
Thanks to that, Duc Anh has achieved an impressive list of achievements. In grade 10, he won first prize in the provincial competition for gifted students, a bronze medal in the Natural Science Olympiad, and a silver medal in the competition for gifted students of high schools in the coastal and northern delta regions.
In grade 11, Duc Anh maintained his form with the first prize at the provincial level, the third prize at the national level in the Chemistry competition; the second prize at the provincial level in the 12th grade competition; the silver medal in the exchange competition to select gifted students of specialized high schools in the coastal and northern delta regions, and the gold medal in the Natural Science Olympiad.
In grade 12, Duc Anh made a breakthrough when he won first prize in the provincial gifted student selection exam and second prize in the national gifted student selection exam. He was summoned by the Ministry of Education and Training to the second round of the selection exam for the international Olympic teams.
With that achievement, Duc Anh was selected by the Vietnam Chemistry Association as one of four members representing the Vietnamese team to compete in the Abu Rayhan-Biruni International Chemistry Olympiad in 2025. Surpassing more than 110 contestants from 14 countries, Duc Anh excellently completed the challenging rounds to bring home the prestigious gold medal for the Vietnamese team.
Sharing about that glorious journey, Duc Anh said: “Before the exam, I had 1 month of self-study, then 1 month of review at Hanoi Pedagogical University. At Hanoi Pedagogical University, in addition to practicing practical skills, we were thoroughly trained in theory and test-taking strategies.
During the official exam, the practical part, my hand got stiff while operating the three-dimensional squeezer (a tool that requires high precision and control) because the tool was too hard.
In the tense situation, I quickly switched to my left hand and persevered to complete the test even though my hands almost lost feeling afterwards. That night, my hands were sore, but the next morning, I still tried to complete the theory test well. At that time, I just thought to myself that I must not give up. And the result did not disappoint my efforts and expectations."
Not only outstanding in his studies, Duc Anh is also an active student who loves sports. He won second prize in the district-level badminton singles at Tam Hop Secondary School; won 2 silver medals in the badminton doubles and football competitions at Vinh Phuc High School for the Gifted. For Duc Anh, sports are not only a hobby, but also a way to relieve pressure and train his will to improve his learning efficiency.
After his success in the international competition, Duc Anh plans to enroll in Hanoi University of Science and Technology because he wants to continue to access advanced science and technology to serve his long-term dream of scientific research. Currently, he is actively studying English to prepare for his desire to study abroad.
Duc Anh's gold medal at the International Chemistry Olympiad did not come easily but was the result of a journey of constant effort. That achievement brought glory to Duc Anh and his family, and at the same time extended the brilliant achievements of Vinh Phuc High School for the Gifted, contributing to affirming the education of Vinh Phuc in particular and Vietnam in general in international academic arenas. Duc Anh's glorious journey has been inspiring the young generation of Vinh Phuc: "Dreams will come true if we strive and persevere to the end".
