Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang met with President Donald Trump at the White House on July 10, just days before his visit to China. The meeting comes as the world’s most valuable technology company is caught in the middle of growing tensions between the U.S. and China over semiconductor technology.
A source familiar with the conversation said the content of the conversation between the two sides has not been made public and declined to disclose the agenda. A White House representative did not comment, while Nvidia also declined to respond to the event.
Jensen Huang has repeatedly stressed the importance of maintaining access for U.S. companies to China, the world’s largest semiconductor market. He regularly visits Beijing and is one of the few Western tech leaders to maintain open relations with officials in the East Asian country.
The US has now imposed a series of restrictions on exports of advanced chip technology to China, cutting off Nvidia from customers in the country. The company expects to lose about $8 billion in revenue in the current quarter due to the controls.
Mr. Huang has criticized the restrictions, saying they could give Chinese rivals a competitive advantage in global markets.
The meeting with Mr. Trump also comes a day after Nvidia officially surpassed the $4,000 billion mark in market capitalization, becoming the world’s largest company by market value. Nvidia’s strong stock performance has been fueled by global demand for AI chips, with major technology corporations such as Microsoft, Meta, Amazon and Alphabet expected to spend more than $350 billion on AI infrastructure in the next few years.
In a social media post the same day, Mr. Trump praised the strong increase in Nvidia shares, saying it was the result of the tariff policy. At the same time, the US President continued to urge the US Federal Reserve (FED) to consider cutting interest rates.
After leaving the US, Mr. Huang will travel to Beijing and is expected to meet with senior officials, including China’s commerce minister, according to a separate source. He will also attend the International Supply Chain Expo in Beijing next week.
