In the Project on Research to improve the exploitation capacity of public maritime infrastructure and existing maritime infrastructure recently submitted by the Vietnam Maritime Administration to the Ministry of Transport , the Vietnam Maritime Administration stated that in recent years, the world maritime industry has witnessed major changes at a very fast pace.
The volume of large ships entering and leaving Ba Ria - Vung Tau seaport area is increasing every year.
New trends are already evident and are expected to create new revolutions in the world maritime industry.
In particular, there is a trend towards chain integration. Not only in the entire end-to-end ecosystem of a complete product, connecting from the factory to the final consumer, but now the maritime industry has more integration with international labor supply organizations, with a digital platform that makes trading and management activities "flatter".
The trend towards going greener is also evident. Tighter IMO emissions and fuel regulations, sustainability and ESG are expected to become a key differentiator and pricing driver in the maritime industry in the future.
For Vietnam, the Government has issued Decision 2027/2020 to implement a green port pilot project at a number of seaports from 2023 and plans to expand this model to other ports by 2050.
At the same time, the 4.0 revolution also creates an increasingly smarter trend. Under the promotion of the trend of integration, expansion, and deep penetration into the global supply chain, the maritime industry is strongly transforming to an increasingly smarter operating model, applying technologies... to increase efficiency and optimize operating costs;
In addition, the maritime industry is also following an increasingly larger trend. Maritime alliances have been formed, the seaport community is closely connected and it is impossible not to mention the strong trend of increasing ship tonnage. This requires a connecting infrastructure system such as waterways, reception systems such as deep-water ports, super ports for future super motherships.
This can be clearly seen in recent times, when more and more large tonnage ships are being built. The number of large tonnage ships arriving at Vietnamese seaports is also increasing.
Typically, in the Ba Ria Vung Tau seaport area, statistics show that in the past 5 years, Ba Ria - Vung Tau seaport has received 3,540 ships with larger tonnage than announced to enter and leave safely. The number of ships with larger tonnage than announced accounts for an increasing proportion of the total number of ships entering and leaving the area.
Specifically, in 2019, the number of large-tonnage ships entering and leaving Vung Tau seaport reached 722 (accounting for 3.3% of the total number of ships entering and leaving the port), and in 2023, the number was 868 (accounting for 4.4% of the total number of ships entering and leaving the port). Of which, there were many very large-tonnage ships of over 200,000 DWT entering and leaving Cai Mep - Thi Vai seaport.
Through that, it can be seen that Cai Mep port area is an international gateway and key national transit port with planned investment, along with maritime infrastructure with large depth that can accommodate large tonnage ships in the world.
In addition, Cai Mep - Thi Vai port area is planned for ships up to 250,000 DWT, so continuing to invest in developing maritime infrastructure in Cai Mep - Thi Vai port area and improving the exploitation capacity at the ports is the top priority to meet the conditions for receiving large tonnage ships.
