The Literature exam in the 2025 High School Graduation Exam has a reading comprehension section which is an excerpt from "Different Skies" in the Best Short Stories Collection by Writer Nguyen Minh Chau.
The social argument section requires that from the reading comprehension results of the text "Different skies" and understanding of the context of the country undergoing many great changes, write an argumentative essay of about 600 words on the topic "any homeland sky is the sky of the Fatherland".
At the exam site of Le Quy Don High School, Ha Dong District ( Hanoi ), candidate Vu Ngoc Anh, one of the first candidates to leave the exam room, said: I took the Literature exam according to the 2018 program and felt that this year's exam, although the material was new, the requirements were quite suitable and appropriate for the students' abilities.
According to Ngoc Anh, the exam has changed in terms of score distribution, including 2 reading comprehension sections with 4 points and writing section with 6 points, in which the paragraph accounts for 2 points and the essay accounts for 4 points. Therefore, the most difficult thing for candidates is to "cut their coat according to their cloth", calculate and allocate time reasonably for the requirements.
Dr. Trinh Thu Tuyet, former Literature teacher at Chu Van An High School for the Gifted (Hanoi) said that this year's exam was quite good and met the requirements of the 2018 General Education Program. In the reading comprehension section, the exam consisted of 5 questions classified according to cognitive levels. Questions 1 and 2 are both at the cognitive level, in which question 1 requires recognition of the narrator in the text, a knowledge of the narrative genre that is very familiar to students; question 2 requires recognition of the two rivers of Le and Son's hometown, a detail that is present in the content of the text. These are two questions that help candidates with average academic ability to achieve maximum scores.
The ability to classify mainly appears in questions 3, 4, 5 at the levels of understanding and application when requiring candidates to have depth of thinking and experience. These are questions with relatively good ability to classify when candidates have to understand and feel not only the difficult circumstances of life fighting to protect the Fatherland but also have to feel the camaraderie, the solidarity of soldiers...
Ms. Nguyen Minh Hue, a teacher at Hoang Mai High School ( Nghe An ), also said that the language in the exam questions is outside the textbook, requiring more reading comprehension, analysis and application of knowledge than before. This innovation will eliminate the situation of rote learning and skewed learning based on sample texts, encouraging students to read a lot and access many different language materials.
However, because this is the first year the exam is conducted according to the new curriculum, the language is also completely new, so many students will be confused. Although the essay is related to current events, which are love and responsibility for the homeland and the Fatherland, because the requirements are quite broad and difficult, it will be difficult for average students to grasp the argumentative issue. However, the requirements of the exam are suitable for excellent students, helping excellent students have more room to express their life experiences, creativity, especially in personal views.
“In general, this year’s Literature exam has differentiation, which will serve universities well in using high school graduation exam results for admission. For average students, they may encounter difficulties because they have not fully adapted to the new way of making questions. The exam scores may not be high, but they will still ensure the goal of graduating from high school because this year the formula for calculating high school graduation scores will be divided equally 50-50 for graduation exam scores and academic results of all three years of high school instead of 70-30 like previous years,” said Ms. Hue.
On the afternoon of June 26, candidates will take the Math test for 90 minutes.
