The Nguyen Dinh family in Hung Yen - originating from Nguyen Dinh Nghi, a famous cai luong composer and Cheo reformer in the early 20th century - has given birth to many generations of talented artists. People's Artist Nguyen Dinh Tuong (stage name Manh Tuong, born in 1934) is one of the representative faces of Northern Cai Luong. He is the grandson of Nguyen Dinh Nghi, and was the Head of Hoa Mai Cai Luong Troupe - a famous art unit. With a powerful voice, rustic and profound acting style and the ability to adapt scripts with special sophistication, he was chosen by the Voice of Vietnam to be the main singer in many programs to encourage the army and people during the resistance war.
Songs such as Vo Thi Thang, Bamboo Flute, Purple Flowers in Autumn, My Hometown's Rice Seeds ... are associated with his name and have been played over and over again, giving soldiers more faith and strength on the battlefield.
Although over 90 years old, People's Artist Manh Tuong still maintains his clarity of mind and deep love for his profession, ready to sing loudly every time he stands on stage or in front of the camera.
People's Artist Nguyen Dinh Chi: More than half a century living with reformed opera
As the younger brother of People's Artist Manh Tuong, People's Artist Nguyen Dinh Chi (stage name Quang Chi, born in 1951) also followed in his brother's footsteps, dedicating his whole life to the cai luong stage. Joining the An Lac Cai Luong Troupe at the age of 14, Quang Chi quickly affirmed his ability through a series of major roles.
With over 50 years of dedication to art, he has portrayed many historical figures such as Tran Hung Dao (play Duc Thanh Tran ), Tran Thu Do (play Tinh su vuong trieu ), or the roles of professors full of inner thoughts in Canh cuon hy hop, Hoa doi bum bum ... With nearly 20 Gold and Silver medals at national and regional theater festivals, People's Artist Quang Chi was honored as People's Artist in 2021.
People's Artist Mai Huong: Famous Cheo artist not only plays supporting roles
People's Artist Tran Thi Mai Huong (stage name Mai Huong) - niece of People's Artist Manh Tuong and People's Artist Quang Chi - is one of the rare female Cheo artists who has never played a supporting role.
The artist was successful in the leading role of Co Son and surprised with the villainous role of Queen Thuong Duong in Thai Uy Ly Thuong Kiet , a heavy and thorny role that helped her win the Gold Medal at the National Cheo Theater Festival.
Not only is she a talented actress, People's Artist Mai Huong also used to be the Deputy Director of the Hanoi Cheo Theater. As the younger brother of People's Artist Mai Huong, People's Artist Tran Tuan Hai (stage name Tuan Hai, born in 1956) is considered a "multi-talented" artist on the drama stage. After graduating from the University of Theatre and Cinema, he joined the Hanoi Police Drama Troupe (with the rank of Captain) and then transferred to the Hanoi Drama Troupe and then the Vietnam Drama Theater - where he has been associated for a long time and has won many awards.
Not being confined to any type of role, Tuan Hai can flexibly transform from tragedy to comedy, from male lead to female supporting role, from old, young to villainous role... Roles such as Quang "dusty life" (play Huong gai ), Ngoc "powdered son" (play Who is the culprit ), Lam (play Living outside the standard )... are vividly portrayed, rich in inner feelings.
