According to preliminary data from the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA), pepper imports from January to July this year reached 31,472 tons, worth about 195.4 million USD.
This figure is almost equal to the total import volume for the whole of 2024 (36,727 tons) and 13% higher in value than the previous year's level of 176.2 million USD. Compared to the same period last year, the imported pepper volume increased by 58.5%, while the value increased by 143.4%. Brazil, Cambodia and Indonesia are the main supplying markets, thanks to the advantages of large cultivated areas and competitive prices.
Domestic pepper output this year has decreased due to a shrinking planting area and unfavorable weather, causing supply to be insufficient to meet processing needs. Vietnam is currently the world's leading pepper processing and exporting center, so many businesses import raw materials for re-export to markets such as the US, Europe and the Middle East.
Domestic pepper prices have increased sharply in recent times, ranging from VND140,000 to VND180,000 per kilogram. Imports from countries with lower prices such as Brazil and Cambodia help businesses maintain their competitive advantage. In addition, companies are diversifying their supply sources to reduce risks from climate change and disease, while also stocking up on raw materials for year-end export needs.
According to expert Hoang Phuoc Binh, increased imports have helped to curb the increase in domestic pepper prices. However, this situation will only decrease when domestic production improves. Currently, consumption and export demand remains high while supply is limited, forcing businesses to continue importing to meet demand.
