Many farmers are in a dilemma.
The price of durian in the West has fallen sharply, putting many farmers in a dilemma. Cutting costs on crop care is not feasible because of the risk of weakening the trees, leading to heavy losses after many years of investment of effort and capital.
During the 2015-2024 period, the durian growing area nationwide increased sharply from 32,000 hectares to more than 178,000 hectares, more than 5 times, with an output of about 1.5 million tons. The West contributed about 35,000 hectares, of which Tien Giang accounted for 24,000 hectares, becoming a key durian production area.
Currently, durian prices are only about 1/3 of what they were in the same period in 2024. The main reason is that the Chinese market – the main consumer – has increased testing for yellow O, a compound that has the potential to cause health risks. This has led to many shipments being returned, forcing them to be consumed domestically at much lower prices.
In 2023, durian achieved an impressive export turnover of 3.3 billion USD, accounting for nearly 50% of the total export value of fruits and vegetables. However, in the first two months of 2025, the export value dropped sharply by 69%, down to 52.7 million USD. The Chinese market alone dropped by 83%, reaching only 27 million USD. From the leading position, durian has dropped to third place, after dragon fruit and bananas in the list of key export items.
