Exploding area, conquering the frozen market
From 32,000 hectares in 2015, the durian growing area in Vietnam has skyrocketed to nearly 180,000 hectares in 2024, an increase of about 6 times, with a total output exceeding 1.5 million tons. Of which, Dak Lak leads the country with more than 38,800 hectares, accounting for about 22% of the total area, reaching an output of 360,000 tons. However, this rapid expansion also poses many sustainability challenges.
As fresh durian exports face strict quarantine barriers and technical requirements, frozen durian is emerging as a strategic solution. Businesses said the first batch of frozen durian exported directly to China was a turning point, helping Vietnam consolidate its position and expand its market share. This also allows Vietnamese durian to directly access the Chinese market, instead of having to go through intermediaries like Thailand did.
According to data from the General Department of Customs ( Ministry of Finance ), in the first 3 months of 2025, Vietnam exported 8,710 tons of frozen durian, reaching a turnover of more than 31 million USD, an increase of 63% in output and more than 50% in value compared to the same period in 2024. Notably, this figure does not include the Chinese market, showing that the growth potential is still very large.
Thanks to its ability to be preserved for up to 12 months, frozen durian can reach deep inland areas in China, surpassing the limits of fresh durian which mainly serves the southern region.
According to the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection ( Ministry of Agriculture and Environment ), more than 20 Vietnamese enterprises have been licensed by the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) to export frozen durian, opening up great opportunities to exploit this market.
