Russia's Gazprom "crosses out" Europe from gas export list in 2025, reason related to Ukraine

Russian energy giant Gazprom has included the option of not exporting gas to Europe via Ukraine after December 31, 2024 in its internal plan for 2025.

According to Reuters (UK), the scenario of the above plan is that Russia will not have a gas transport route through Ukraine next year. The plan is awaiting approval from Gazprom's senior leaders.

According to sources, in 2025, Russia's gas exports abroad, mainly to Europe and Türkiye, are expected to fall by a fifth, from 49 billion cubic meters this year to below 39 billion cubic meters.

Meanwhile, Russian gas exports to China via the Power of Siberia pipeline are expected to reach 38 billion cubic meters next year.

Kiev has repeatedly expressed its desire to terminate the agreement on the transit of Moscow gas to Europe.

Meanwhile, Russia has repeatedly signaled its readiness to negotiate and continue transporting gas through this pipeline.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said the country is ready to continue pumping gas through Ukraine.

The gas transit deal ends on December 31, 2024, ending more than half a century of gas deliveries from Siberia to Central European markets.

Gas exports to Europe via Ukraine have been a stable source of budget revenue for Russia.

Moscow's gas transit deal also brings Kiev transit fees of up to $1 billion a year.

Before Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine began (February 2022), Moscow was Europe’s number one gas supplier. However, Russia lost almost all of its European customers as the European Union (EU) attempted to cut off its energy supply and after the Nord Stream pipeline was sabotaged in September 2022.

Russian gas supplies to Europe via Ukraine have already fallen considerably. In 2023, Moscow will ship around 15 billion cubic metres of gas via its eastern European neighbour – just 8% of the amount of Russian gas that was delivered to the continent via various routes during the peak period of 2018-2019.
