Nearly 20 students return to Choi Xanh International School

Quang Nam Nearly 20 primary and secondary school students returned to Choi Xanh International School on the first day of school reopening.

On the afternoon of September 11, Mr. Nguyen Quoc Huong, who was authorized by Ms. Catherine Clare Mckinley, a British citizen and owner of Green Shoots International School, to operate the school, announced the above information. The school operates on the campus of Victoria Inter-level School, Dien Ngoc Ward, Dien Ban Town, about 20 km from the old school.

According to him, this morning 6 former foreign teachers of Green Shoots also came to school. Other teachers said that when the students return, they will come to teach.

A parent with children in grade 2 and grade 8 said he brought his two children to school today because they had not enrolled anywhere yet.

"When the new school year started nationwide on September 5, some parents were worried that Green Shoots would close permanently, so they applied to other schools. I waited patiently because I believed the school would reopen," he said.

Meanwhile, another parent decided not to return despite paying 100 million VND in tuition to Green Shoots.

"I don't trust the school anymore," she said.

Previously, Green Shoots had 95 students. For parents who paid tuition but did not return, Mr. Huong said that according to the law, Green Shoots must refund.

"The school will negotiate with each parent and resolve each case individually," said Mr. Huong.

Green Shoots International School was licensed by Quang Nam to enroll students from kindergarten to high school in 2014. Before that, the school opened in 2011 but was small in scale, mainly for preschool children. In the license, Green Shoots teaches the British nationaleducation program (IPC, IGCSE) and the international baccalaureate program (IBD and IBDP). The school is located in Cam Chau ward, Hoi An city.

According to the Department of Education and Training, until the 2019-2020 school year, the school operated effectively, ensuring educational quality and gaining the trust of parents. The use and management of the school's staff were in accordance with legal regulations.

Since the middle of the first semester of the 2020-2021 school year, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the school has encountered many difficulties in recruiting students. As a private school, tuition revenue has decreased, so activities have been affected. By the end of the 2022-2023 school year, the school has 95 students, most of whom are children of foreigners, with only 11 students of Vietnamese nationality. There are a total of 43 teachers and staff working here.

In 2022, the school had planned to move to another location because the current lease did not renew. However, this was not implemented.

According to the parents, the school announced that the new school year would start on August 22, but on August 8, they unexpectedly received a notice from Ms. Catherine about transferring their children to another school in Da Nang . Meanwhile, with tuition fees of 350-400 million VND per year, the parents have paid about 14 billion VND. The recommended school refused to accept them. As the new school year approaches, many parents have to register their children at other schools.

On September 8, Green Shoots sent a report to the Department of Education and Training of Quang Nam province, announcing its resumption of operations and its move to a new location at Victoria Inter-level School. The school pledged to maintain the same curriculum and activities.

Quang Nam Province Police said they had received a complaint from parents accusing Green Shoots School of fraud and money appropriation. Quang Nam Province Vice Chairman Tran Anh Tuan said he would ask the British Embassy to intervene and recall Ms. Catherine from the UK to deal with the problems.
