German authorities are taking steps to remove DeepSeek - a popular Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) application from the world's two largest app stores today, the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store, citing concerns about user data protection.
In a statement on June 27, Ms. Meike Kamp - Commissioner of the German data protection authority - said that Apple and Google had received information about DeepSeek having "illegal content," forcing the two American technology corporations to review and decide whether to block this application in the German market or not.
“DeepSeek has not been able to provide us with convincing evidence that German users’ data is protected in China to the same extent as in the European Union (EU),” Ms. Kamp stressed.
DeepSeek shocked the tech world in January 2025 when it announced it had developed an AI model that could compete with leading US products like OpenAI's ChatGPT, but at a significantly lower cost.
However, the company also admitted that it stores many types of personal data, including queries sent to AI and files uploaded by users, on servers located in China./.
