According to the Ministry of Education and Training , if calculated according to the traditional blocks including A00, B00, A01 and D01, this year's high school graduation exam season nationwide had 9 candidates achieving the absolute score of 30/30 in blocks A00 and B00.
Uneven subject score distribution
MSc. Phung Quan, University of Natural Sciences - VNU-HCM, said that according to the score distribution of this year's high school exam, only about 12% of candidates achieved 7 points or higher in math, while the rate for physics was 54%, chemistry was 34%; in English, up to 85% of candidates scored below 7 points. Math scores decreased sharply compared to previous years, while other subjects fluctuated slightly and insignificantly.
Dr. Nguyen Quoc Anh, Vice Principal of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HUTECH), assessed that the average scores of the 2025 exams generally decreased compared to 2024. The percentage of candidates scoring below average (<5 points) in many subjects increased significantly. The number of 10 points in some subjects such as physics, geography, history, information technology... increased, but in basic subjects such as math, literature, English decreased or was very low. The standard deviation in most subjects increased, demonstrating a more obvious differentiation between candidates.

Mathematics is the subject with the largest average score drop of all subjects. In this subject, the score distribution this year is strongly tilted towards the below average, showing that the exam is difficult and highly differentiated. The number of candidates scoring below the average has increased more than 3 times. Although there are scores of 10, the rate is still low (0.45/1,000 candidates). In English, the score distribution is still mainly concentrated around the average level, not changing much towards the median. However, the rate of high scores has decreased significantly, the number of scores of 10 is very low. The decrease in standard deviation shows that the score distribution is concentrated around the average level, with few breakthroughs at the two ends of the score distribution.
Mid-level school shake-up
Professor Nguyen Dinh Duc, Chairman of the University Council of the University of Technology - Vietnam National University, Hanoi , commented that the average scores of all subjects decreased compared to last year, except for physics. Of which, math decreased the most, from 6.45 points to 4.78 points. The score distribution shifted from right to left. Chemistry had an average score decrease of 0.62, down to 6.06. Physics alone increased from 6.67 points last year to 6.99 points. Looking at the right side of the score distribution of subjects, the percentage of excellent scores (from 8 and above) decreased sharply, especially in math and English, while in previous years, the percentage of excellent scores was up to 20% -30%. With the above score distribution, it is predicted that this year's university entrance score will be lower than last year for many reasons, including better differentiation of the exam questions and a decrease in the average score. The percentage of excellent scores is lower than previous years, so the admission score is about 2-3 points lower than last year, depending on the field. In particular, the combination of math and English subjects has a predicted decrease in the admission score.
According to Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Dao Tung, Director of the Academy of Finance, it is predicted that this year the school's benchmark score range will be wide, possibly 22 - 28 points. The benchmark scores of some majors may decrease by 3 - 4 points compared to last year. A wide score range will be an opportunity for candidates to confidently register for the right major, improving their chances of being admitted to the academy.
Mr. Vu Khac Ngoc, an education expert at the Hoc Mai Education System, said that with this year's score range, the benchmark scores for B00 majors could decrease by 1-2 points. For top medical schools, the decrease could be about 1 point.
"Compared to the score in 2024, the median score this year is 2.2 points lower. The median score in 2024 was 6.8; this year it is 4.6. Therefore, the admission score for the combination of math, physics and chemistry will decrease this year; the admission combination with math is expected to decrease by about 0.5 - 1 point. For middle and lower-ranked schools, in the combination of math, the admission score is likely to decrease by 1 - 1.5 points. The standard score of the transcript or the capacity assessment may also decrease compared to last year because it must be converted to the equivalent of the 2025 high school graduation exam score," an expert commented.
In addition, with the average score like this year, many candidates may adjust their wishes lower due to the mentality of lowering their scores to be sure of passing. This may cause the benchmark scores of mid-ranked schools to fluctuate strongly. A representative of CMC University said that due to changes in exam questions and admission regulations, the school is likely to adjust the benchmark scores slightly lower than previous years. The school is considering optimal solutions to ensure input quality while still creating the most favorable conditions for candidates.
More forecasts
According to Dr. Nguyen Trung Nhan, Head of Training Department - Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry, with the announced score distribution, the admission score by high school graduation exam score method will decrease in all fields. In particular, the fields of admission for math - chemistry - biology will decrease sharply, possibly up to 2 - 3 points compared to 2024. At the school, most groups always have 2 compulsory subjects: math - physics, so the admission score by this method will decrease a lot, possibly up to 2 points compared to the previous year. Especially the groups of chemistry, biology, and environment can decrease more, up to 2.5 points.
In 2025, except for the direct admission method, the remaining methods will all be converted to a common score for admission, leading to the possibility of adjusting the benchmark score in many majors. MSc. Phung Quan said that for majors with benchmark scores of 28 or more in previous years, the benchmark score this year may decrease slightly but not significantly. Majors with benchmark scores below 28 points will tend to decrease sharply, commonly from 1 - 2 points, applied to most combinations such as A00, A01, B00, D01. Specifically, according to the combination: Combinations A00, A01, B00 are expected to decrease by 1.5 - 2 points in many majors, especially engineering, technology, and medicine. Combination D01 may decrease more slightly, about 0.5 - 1.5 points, but majors such as economics, languages, and law will still maintain their competitiveness if the quota does not increase. The above "hot" majors can still maintain high admission scores thanks to other priority combined admission methods. Other majors will be clearly affected, with admission scores likely to drop sharply this year.
MSc. Nguyen Thi Kim Phung, Deputy Head of Admissions - Communications and Business Relations Department - University of Finance - Marketing, assessed that this year's exam scores tend to be clearly differentiated between admission groups. Traditional groups such as A00 (math - physics - chemistry), A01 (math - physics - English), D01 (math - literature - English) and B00 (math - chemistry - biology) all recorded a decrease in average scores compared to last year, mainly due to lower scores in math and English. This will cause the benchmark scores of many majors, especially those in the economics - management - engineering group, to potentially decrease by 1 - 2 points. Meanwhile, groups C00 (literature - history - geography), C19 (literature - history - economics and law), D14 (literature - history - English) maintained stability thanks to an even score distribution and higher than average in social subjects.

According to Dr. Nguyen Quoc Anh, the expected benchmark score for HUTECH's majors this year will fluctuate between 15 and 20 points, depending on the admission method after converting scores. In particular, the benchmark score is about 15-17 points for admission methods using high school graduation exam scores and Ho Chi Minh City National University's competency assessment test scores or VSAT exam (after converting to a 30-point scale); about 18-20 points for admission methods using 12th grade transcripts. HUTECH's benchmark score this year may be equal to or lower than the benchmark score in 2024 (16-21 points). For majors in the health sciences sector, the benchmark score will be determined based on the input quality assurance threshold prescribed by the Ministry of Education and Training.
