Attending the welcoming ceremony were Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the People's Committee of Bac Lieu province Pham Van Thieu; Deputy Director of the Department of Cultural Heritage Nong Quoc Thanh (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism); leaders and former leaders of Bac Lieu province.
Vinh Hung archaeological site (located in Trung Hung 1B hamlet, Vinh Hung A commune, Vinh Loi district), also known as Tra Long Tower, Luc Hien Tower.
This is where the thousand-year-old ancient tower was discovered in 1911. This is a unique structure with historical and cultural significance, dating back to the 4th century AD. It is the only remaining Oc Eo cultural architecture in the Southwest.
In 1992, Vinh Hung Archaeological Site was recognized as a national relic by the Ministry of Culture and Information (now the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism).
On July 18, 2024, the Prime Minister issued Decision No. 694/QD-TTg on ranking the Vinh Hung Archaeological Site in Vinh Loi District, Bac Lieu Province as a special national monument.
At the ceremony, authorized by the Prime Minister and the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Deputy Director of the Department of Cultural Heritage Nong Quoc Thanh announced the Prime Minister's decision on ranking the Vinh Hung Archaeological Site as a special national relic and awarded the Certificate of ranking the Vinh Hung Archaeological Site as a special national relic to the Provincial People's Committee.
This is a special event, contributing to honoring, preserving, conserving and promoting the heritage values of the nation and people, effectively serving scientific research work, as well as educating historical values to generations of people, especially people in the Southern region.
Speaking at the ceremony, Chairman of Bac Lieu Provincial People's Committee Pham Van Thieu emphasized that the Prime Minister's signing of the Decision to rank Vinh Hung archaeological site as a special national relic has affirmed the importance of the historical, cultural, scientific and aesthetic values of this relic.
“With the special values of the relic, the Prime Minister has ranked Vinh Hung Archaeological Site, Vinh Loi District, Bac Lieu Province as a Special National Relic. This is not only the pride of the people of Vinh Loi District and Bac Lieu Province, but also contributes practically to preserving the richness and diversity of Vietnam's tangible cultural heritage,” the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee affirmed.
The Chairman of the Bac Lieu Provincial People's Committee requested the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism to coordinate with relevant agencies to urgently develop a Relics Planning to promptly determine the content and measures to preserve, renovate and restore the original elements of the relic in order to promote the value of the special national relic, gradually building this place into a Center for research and preservation of the Oc Eo culture of the Southern region.
Besides, the Department needs to effectively implement the work of preserving and promoting the value of relics in accordance with the provisions of the law on cultural heritage.
The Chairman of the People's Committee of Bac Lieu province also requested that the Party Committee, government, Fatherland Front, armed forces and organizations at all levels of Bac Lieu province regularly have plans to organize trips to the source and visit relics.
On this occasion, the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee awarded 3 collectives and 8 individuals with outstanding achievements in preserving and promoting the value of relics and establishing records of special national relics.
Thereby, it has contributed to determining the history of the first ancient kingdom of Funan in Southeast Asia with a large territory in both Southern Indochina and Malaysia. The collected archaeological documents became an important foundation in the early history of the country's founding in the Southern region.
Vinh Hung archaeological site is typical and unique, being “an intact tower-shaped architecture in the South” and having “the unique character of an architectural foundation remaining on the ground of the Oc Eo culture”. The formation and existence of this archaeological site contributes to demonstrating the history of formation, development, sophistication in crafting and rich religious life of the ancient residents of the Oc Eo culture in the South - Vietnam.
