Today (September 10), the 2024 Vietnam Open badminton tournament kicked off at Nguyen Du Stadium (HCMC) with the highlight being the competition between Vietnamese badminton icon Nguyen Tien Minh and Indian player Abhyansh Singh.
Nguyen Tien Minh still persistently pursues his passion for badminton
Due to a lack of international competition in recent times, 41-year-old tennis player Nguyen Tien Minh is currently ranked 508th in the world . That is the reason why he had to be on the waiting list for the men's singles qualifying round of the 2024 Vietnam Open badminton tournament and only won a ticket at the last minute when some players withdrew.
At the peak of his career, Tien Minh was ranked 5th in the world and won the men's singles championship at the Vietnam Open Badminton Tournament many times, but now he is on the other side of the career slope because he is over 40 years old. However, the person who holds the record of Vietnamese sports with 4 Olympic tickets is still pursuing his passion for badminton and had a spectacular victory over the world ranked 327th player Abhyansh Singh.
Nguyen Tien Minh enters the main round of the men's singles of the 2024 Vietnam Open badminton tournament
Youth helped Abhyansh Singh dominate Nguyen Tien Minh in the first set and win 21/16 in the first set. The Indian player continued to lead in the first set of the second set and many people thought that Tien Minh would have to give up his racket in just two sets. However, with experience and perseverance, the player from Ho Chi Minh City came back to defeat his opponent with scores of 21/12 and 21/13 respectively.
The victory after 49 minutes of competition brought Nguyen Tien Minh a ticket to the main round of the men's singles. Tien Minh was more fortunate when he was exempted from the first match of the main round and faced the winner of the match between Samuel Lee (Malaysia, world rank 266) and Kartikey Gulshan (India, world rank 128) in the next round.

Also in the men's singles category, there are two more Vietnamese players participating in the main round, Le Duc Phat and Nguyen Hai Dang. In the women's singles category, Vietnamese badminton also has three representatives in the main round, Nguyen Thuy Linh, Vu Thi Trang, Vu Thi Anh Thu. However, the draw unfortunately made Anh Thu face Thuy Linh in the first round.
