Proposing appropriate traffic diversion to reduce traffic pressure on National Highway 1, southern section of Quang Tri province

Việt NamViệt Nam02/04/2024

According to information from the Provincial Traffic Safety Committee, before the decision to regulate and separate traffic on the Cam Lo - La Son expressway was made to prohibit passenger vans with more than 30 seats, sleeper buses, and vehicles with 6 axles or more (including monocoque vehicles and tractor-trailer combinations with a load capacity of over 30 tons) from traveling on the route from April 4, the unit had sent a document to the Vietnam Road Administration proposing to consider and study a traffic separation plan according to appropriate times, in order to reduce traffic pressure on National Highway 1, the southern section of Quang Tri province.

Because vehicles are prohibited from traveling on the Cam Lo - La Son expressway, they are forced to go through National Highway 1 through Quang Tri province. Meanwhile, National Highway 1 through Dong Ha city currently has no bypass, inter-provincial vehicles must go through the city center. This leads to a very high risk of traffic accidents, especially during rush hour, in the rain, at night... In fact, there have been many tragic accidents on this route, causing outrage among the people and public opinion.

According to the Provincial Traffic Safety Committee, since the Cam Lo - La Son Expressway was put into operation, the number of vehicles passing through Dong Ha City and National Highway 1 in the south of the province has been greatly reduced. Thanks to that, in 2023, traffic accidents in the area have decreased in all three criteria.

Therefore, the Provincial Traffic Safety Committee requested the Vietnam Road Administration to direct relevant agencies and units to study traffic diversion plans at appropriate times, in order to reduce traffic pressure on National Highway 1, the southern section of Quang Tri province; at the same time, when dividing traffic on the Cam Lo - La Son expressway, the department requested the study not to divide traffic onto provincial road DT.585C, because this route has a small road surface width, no lighting, and currently due to the large traffic volume, it has seriously degraded and damaged.

Regarding this issue, previously, on March 27, the Department of Transport also sent a document requesting the Vietnam Road Administration to study a plan to regulate traffic flow on the Cam Lo - La Son expressway based on current regulations and related legal bases, suitable to actual conditions and meeting the needs of local socio-economic development.

In the immediate future, the Vietnam Road Administration is requested to direct relevant agencies and units to inspect, review, and supplement the traffic sign system to ensure safety conditions according to design and actual situation; increase patrols, control, and handle traffic violations on this expressway.
