For the cultural industry to "take off": Need to start with the young generation

To develop the cultural industry commensurate with its existing potential and strengths, exploiting and maximizing the power of high-quality human resources is a necessary condition. However, this is clearly a "long-term problem" due to the lack of human resources. Many experts believe that human resource development needs to originate from the younger generation.

These are the experts' shares in the online discussion "Developing cultural industry" with the topic of human resources and identity held on June 10.

Human resource development starts with the young generation

Cultural industry is an important component of the national economy based on creativity, science and technology and intellectual property; maximizing the economic factor of cultural values; actively contributing to the process of economic growth, job creation, and increasing income for workers through the production of more and more diverse and high-quality cultural products and services, meeting the needs of creativity, enjoyment, and cultural consumption of domestic people and for export. At the same time, contributing to promoting the image of the country and Vietnamese people to international friends.

Among the components of cultural industry, human resources are of particular importance.

Sharing from the perspective of a State manager, Deputy Director of the Copyright Department - Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism Le Minh Tuan emphasized: "Human resource development is not only the work of the cultural industry but all industries need high-quality human resources. Human resources in the cultural industry have the characteristic of increasing creativity. In particular, human resource development needs to start from when children are young. The young generation will help form the force and human resources for the next generation. After learning and experiencing, they will develop a love for musical instruments, art forms, and form creative thinking, love for the profession, and artistic activities. The Government has directed the mobilization of artists to participate in teaching at all levels of training and at the grassroots level, because in the specific field of cultural and artistic activities, experienced artists with skillful skills will help convey to students, with many years of experience in artistic activities, a deep love for the profession, and pass it on to the younger generation".

Citing examples from other countries around the world, director Aaron Toronto said that to develop the cultural industry, we can look to Korea. How much has Korea developed since 1990, and what can we learn from such examples?

"I think that to develop the cultural industry, human resources and cultural identity go together, blending into one. There are two necessary issues, which are means and output. What means does Korea have? They have a film council, a fund for the arts, and streamlined state agency procedures. They have an output such as the Busan Film Festival, many awards... to help Korean cinema develop. Therefore, I hope that Vietnam also has the same means and output. Playgrounds for professionals to freely create. I think that when art flourishes and creative works develop, commercial success and the development of the cultural industry will naturally come. Human resources are available, we need means and output to unleash them."

Sharing the same view, director and educator Kathy Uyen believes that to develop the cultural industry, it is necessary to create many opportunities for young professionals to confidently share their passion. Quality human resources are those who are passionate, not those who are pressured by the market to produce products that satisfy the market, attract views, commerce, and costs, losing their confidence and artistic goals.

"I think it is important to inspire young people to be confident, courageous, enter the profession and nurture their passion. In the US, I see that the remuneration levels for actors and crew members are clear, the levels are fair so that producers do not have to "pay the price", looking at the professionals, we know clearly with their current ability what remuneration level they will achieve and what level they will have when striving for higher levels. It helps young people see that if they participate, they will have this and this in the future, and helps them feel secure in their career and strive more" - director and educator Kathy Uyen said.

Take Vietnamese culture as "standard"

In addition, the world culture is developing strongly, this is an important factor that helps Vietnam easily approach and make its mark on the world cultural and artistic market. On the other hand, the risk of Vietnamese identity being dissolved is also something to note.

Deputy Head of the Department of Science - Culture - Arts, Propaganda and Mass Mobilization of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee Nguyen Thi Ngoc Diem commented: "The identity already exists, the cultural industry already exists, the identity in the cultural industry also already exists. Thanks to the creativity of artists and producers who have both gone and paved the way over the past 20 years. Up to now, we have had producers and artists who have initially succeeded in bringing Vietnamese identity to the world. Natural selection or public reception helps artists realize that in order to create works that spread widely and gain the support of the audience, we must take Vietnamese culture as the standard."

Along with that, Dr. Do Tien, a human resource training expert in the creative industry, emphasized that human resources need to be properly trained in inheritance, so that the quintessence of national culture is deeply imbued into the younger generation. The career of cultivating people is not just 5 years, 10 years but a long journey. Preserving national culture is not only preserving symbolic images but also the spirit and character of the Vietnamese spirit.

Therefore, Dr. Do Tien believes that there should be more in-depth discussions for young people, especially in the school environment, to orient them on the path of national culture, especially in an era of rapidly developing media.

"In the diverse cultural flow of the world, we can easily lose our own identity if we do not understand who we are. Therefore, training is the core to develop human resources. Besides, it is necessary to clearly define integration but not conservatism as the direction of the path. We need to have a strong will to choose the appropriate quintessence of human culture to diversify the national culture" - Dr. Do Tien said.

According to Vice President of Ho Chi Minh City Cinema Association, Associate Professor, Dr. Phan Bich Ha, we have had human resources for a long time. However, up to now, we have only trained how to create a work of art, but have neglected the training of managers and people who can grasp high technology.

"In the modern media era, artists must know how to communicate cultural products. At the same time, it is necessary to focus on foreign languages because foreign languages are the key to opening the door to the world. In my opinion, identity is not something far away but the memories and behaviors in the daily lives of Vietnamese people. Therefore, we need to pay attention to those small, everyday things and skillfully bring them into cultural products" - Associate Professor, Dr. Phan Bich Ha shared./.
