Reuters news agency reported that Cologne FC received a heavy fine of 641,529 USD (more than 15.5 billion VND) for allowing fans to set off fireworks during the match against Monchengladbach on October 23, within the framework of the Bundesliga.

According to records, electric fireworks and flares were lit in the stands of Rhein Energie Stadium - home of Cologne FC. The match had to be postponed for nearly 10 minutes.

However, Cologne FC believes that this penalty is too severe and they are taking actions to appeal to the German Football Association. The team admits its mistake but hopes that the fine will be reduced due to difficult financial circumstances.

Cologne fans caused their team to be penalized many times.

Cologne CEO Christian Keller said: “ For fans, the use of fireworks is part of football and fan culture. But we must not cross the line. The safety of fans must always be guaranteed and cannot affect the sporting event. But this time the line has been crossed .”

According to Mr. Keller, the incident on the field has had a big impact on the Cologne Club. The fine of more than 640,000 USD significantly affects the finances of a small team, especially in the current difficult situation.

Imposing sanctions in this way is far from the reality of German football and fan culture. Therefore, we will continue to actively advocate for a reasonable adjustment of sanctions to suit German football and the current situation, ” added Mr. Keller.

However, this team needs to take appropriate measures with their home fans. Not only in the Bundesliga but also when competing in the Europa League, Cologne fans often set off fireworks causing chaos in stadiums across Europe.

The match between Cologne and Monchengladbach is also known as the Rhine derby. This is considered one of the most attractive derbies in the Bundesliga.

In the match where the incident occurred, Cologne won with a score of 3-1.
