Teaching and learning in the highlands of Lang Son

Currently, many educational institutions in remote areas of Lang Son province still face limitations in terms of information connection and technology updates. However, identifying science, technology, innovation and digital transformation as the focus for development, the education sector of Lang Son province has made efforts to overcome difficulties.

Quality of education

According to Director of the Department of Education and Training of Lang Son province Hoang Quoc Tuan, the digital platform will clearly support teaching and assessment in the online environment, while allowing access to a wide range of knowledge from many sources, not limited to a fixed curriculum.

Digital materials also meet the requirements of educational innovation and access to advanced educational standards. The Department has increased investment and supplemented information technology equipment for schools.

To date, 100% of educational institutions have fiber optic internet and computers for management and operations; 100% of schools apply management software.

With the motto "Application of information technology and digital transformation in education and training must take learners and teachers as the center", the province promotes scientific research at educational institutions in the direction of finding practical and effective solutions in life, creating a dynamic creative environment, arousing students' passion for learning and discovery.

At the 15th Lang Son Province Youth and Children's Creativity Contest, the research topic "Application of 3S technology in building zoning maps and landslide warnings in Lang Son Province" by the group of students Nguyen Trieu Vy and Nguyen Khanh Ngan (Chu Van An High School for the Gifted, Dong Kinh Ward) won the Second Prize with positive reviews on its feasibility.

Through documents assessing factors causing landslides in the basin, geology, forest and vegetation cover, slope, rainfall..., the research team has initially built a landslide risk zoning map and proposed solutions for landslide management.

“The locality will communicate, provide career guidance and orientation for students to choose basic science subject combinations, prepare to create resources for scientific research as well as develop applied science. The Department will also organize scientific research at educational institutions, especially at colleges and vocational training institutions, and encourage the scientific research movement according to the Government's program,” said Phan My Hanh, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Lang Son province.

Lack of human resources and facilities

The level of IT teachers in the province is uneven, some do not meet the job requirements. In addition, the number of IT teachers and staff is still lacking, especially at preschool and primary levels.

“At Tan Van Secondary School, we only have one teacher who is professionally trained to teach computer science. Due to limited human resources, this teacher has to be assigned to many other schools in the surrounding area.

In addition, teachers at the school have deployed electronic lesson plans, but because socialized resources are limited, the school's internal capacity has not ensured enough televisions and audio-visual equipment for classes, so it has not met the needs and quality of lectures," said Ms. Ly Phuong Thao, Principal of the school.

According to the summary report of the first 6 months of 2025 on digital transformation of the Department of Education and Training of Lang Son province, the budget for maintenance, upgrading, additional equipment, arrangement of computer rooms, rooms for teaching information technology application lessons... at many remote educational institutions is still lacking.

Many schools (mostly preschool level) do not have computer rooms or the number is too small to support teaching and learning of computer science and foreign languages.

In some schools, fiber optic internet and mobile infrastructure are unstable.

Teacher Pham Ba Hong, Principal of Bac Son Town Secondary School, Bac Son Commune, said that the area of the school's computer science classroom is 45m2 , not meeting the regulation of 60m2 , because the school was built a long time ago. The number of computers is only enough for half of the students in a class.

“Many students are very interested in IT and technology subjects, but they only have access to them at school because their families are poor and cannot equip themselves with digital learning conditions at home,” Mr. Hong added.

Lang Son province has included the STEM-Robotics-AI education program (a curriculum that combines the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics to create robots and artificial intelligence) into its curriculum for many years now, receiving very positive responses from students and teachers.

However, due to limitations in facilities, the conditions for implementing this program in disadvantaged areas of Lang Son province are still limited. Many schools in particularly disadvantaged communes of the province are currently only able to rent equipment and teaching aids for students when there are provincial or district level exams.

“Seeing the passion of the students, our collective teachers, through our own efforts, established the school’s robotics club. Up to now, the students have also won many district-level awards. That has greatly encouraged the teachers and students of the school,” said Mr. Ly Van Tho, Principal of Thien Hoa Secondary School, Thien Hoa Commune.

The education sector of Lang Son province has developed many solutions, determined to fully meet the practical needs of educational management and teaching activities. Accordingly, propaganda, dissemination, raising awareness and responsibility for the application of information technology and digital transformation in education and training are given top priority; promoting cooperation with enterprises, organizations and information technology associations...

“The cooperation will help us improve the capacity of applying information technology for the management staff, teachers and employees of the industry, thereby developing quality human resources. In addition, we are also mobilizing all resources to have more IT equipment and computer rooms to serve teaching and learning for educational institutions throughout the province,” said Mr. Hoang Quoc Tuan.
