High input but health sector has few excellent and talented graduates

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên28/05/2024

It is difficult for students to achieve excellent results, and many majors do not even have excellent graduates.

Among the 43 new pharmacists of the 2018-2023 class who were awarded degrees from Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine in July 2023, only 8 pharmacists were classified as good (no excellent).

Even the largest medical training units in the country, which attract many excellent students, are no different. According to statistics on the 2022 graduation ranking results of Hanoi Medical University, out of 1,128 students awarded degrees, there were no excellent students. Of which, excellent students accounted for about 7.7%; good students accounted for 67%; average students accounted for 23.4% and average students accounted for 1.77%.

The general medicine major enrolled students in 2017 with a record high admission score of 29.25, but the graduation results of new general practitioners in the 2017-2023 course were only equivalent to previous years. The graduation rate of general medicine majors with excellent grades was 14.59%; good was 73.36%. Many other majors did not have excellent graduates such as nursing, public health , and ophthalmology. Some majors had only 1-2 excellent graduates such as traditional medicine doctors, preventive medicine doctors, medical testing, nutrition, etc.

Comparing the ranking results of a medical school at two different times, the situation is still similar, with no outstanding students. For example, out of 327 general medicine students at Hai Phong University of Medicine and Pharmacy who were recognized as graduates in the 2008-2014 course, only 15 were excellent, the number of good and average students was nearly 300, the rest were average. Nine years later, out of 507 students awarded medical doctor degrees in the 2017-2023 course, only 36 were classified as excellent, 405 as good, and 66 as average.

In the graduation ceremony last October, the Faculty of Medicine (Ho Chi Minh City National University) had 132 medical students and 55 pharmacy students graduating, with no excellent students. Of the total 187 students graduating from the two majors, only 10.7% graduated with honors. Of which, excellent students from the medical major accounted for just over 6% and pharmacy students accounted for nearly 22%.

358 students were recognized as graduating as medical doctors at the 2022 ceremony of Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy, with 1 student graduating with honors and 45 with distinction.
