Bizot is likely to replace Martinez. |
According to The Athletic , Aston Villa have reached an agreement on a transfer fee with the Ligue 1 club. The Dutch goalkeeper is expected to arrive in England next week to become Aston Villa's second new signing of the summer transfer window, following Zepiqueno Redmond, who joined the club on a free transfer.
Marco Bizot, 34, a former Dutch international, came through Ajax's prestigious youth academy but failed to break into the first team. He moved to France in the summer of 2021 when Brest completed a €1 million deal.
In Ligue 1, Bizot entered a new chapter in his career, helping Brest become the "dark horse" of the tournament, finishing third in the domestic league, behind only PSG and Monaco. The veteran goalkeeper also made nine appearances in the team's 2024/25 Champions League campaign.
With the acquisition of Bizot, Aston Villa could soon sell Martinez in the near future. With an estimated transfer value of around £40 million, selling Martinez would greatly help Aston Villa in balancing their finances.
Missing out on a Champions League ticket means "The Villains" will lose a large source of revenue next season, forcing them to even sell some key players to ensure financial sustainability in the Premier League.
The 2022 World Cup winner has been a key figure at Villa Park under Unai Emery over the past two years, but with Aston Villa struggling financially and the player’s contract expiring in June 2027, it is in the best interests of all parties that Martínez leaves this summer.
The Argentine goalkeeper himself has repeatedly revealed his desire to try his hand at a bigger club, and Manchester United and Chelsea have also been mentioned as potential destinations.
