REPORTER: With more than 20 years in the profession, having released many films and participated in film festivals and film awards, what special feelings do you have with the release of Trang Quynh nhi: Legend of Kim Nguu?
* Director - Meritorious Artist TRINH LAM TUNG : Although I have made many works, including short films and feature films, Trang Quynh nhi: The Legend of Kim Nguu is my first commercial film. The film forces me to balance between art and technique, between entertainment and the transmission of traditional folk cultural values.
In particular, if in the past, I only focused on expertise, this time, I also had to worry about commercial factors. As a producer, I have come to agree with Associate Professor Dr. Bui Hoai Son's point of view: to preserve culture, we must commercialize culture. It sounds contradictory, but in reality, in countries with developed animation industries such as the US, Japan, Korea, etc., it is thanks to successful commercialization that their culture spreads globally. That spirit is clearly expressed in this film.
In Trang Quynh nhi: The Legend of Kim Nguu, there are many legends and myths brought into the film. How did you string them together and create a tight logical thread?
* In my opinion, a movie that wants to reach the audience must first have an attractive story, with a tightly constructed script. Luckily, I am both the director and the main artist in charge of character creation, in charge of aesthetic elements, and directly participate in writing the script with my colleagues. During the working process, we edited and added details many times. Even when we reach the film version, if we find any part is not good, we still redo it until we are most satisfied. The most important criterion I set is to tell an easy-to-understand, clear story, then develop deep layers of meaning, or insert special techniques.
How long did it take you from script stage to finished film?
* A number that makes many people startled, the whole process took place in about 3 years. Of which, the first 1.5 years, we spent developing the series Trang Quynh in his silly days (more than 100 episodes have been broadcast on digital platforms such as YouTube). This series not only measures audience reactions, but also helps the team practice skills and perfect the production process. The remaining time is divided into 6 months for pre-production of the script and 1 year for production - post-production. To ensure progress and health, the crew had to divide into shifts, work back and forth, and not stop until completion.
Is the success of the series Trang Quynh in his childhood a premise to help you and your team have certain advantages in calling for investment?
* That's right. When the project was first introduced, many investors were hesitant, because there had never been an animated film officially released in theaters before, nor was there any precedent or basis for measuring commercial effectiveness. At that time, I was fortunate to meet Mr. Ta Manh Hoang, founder and CEO of Sconnect Vietnam. We both set a goal of not only producing animated films for theaters, but also building Trang Quynh Nhi as an asset, an intellectual property (IP) brand with long-term exploitation value - from licensing, franchising to multi-platform development.
We expect this to be a “national IP”, similar to Japan’s Doraemon. If we can do that, I believe investors will see animation not only as an entertainment product for children, but also as a spearhead of a cultural industry.
After this movie, what are your next plans?
* We have started planning for Trang Quynh Nhi Part 2, but it is clear that we need more time to review and improve the shortcomings of the first part. To do well in the next part, in my opinion, we need a solid “tripod”. First is the support, trust and encouragement from the audience. In particular, a positive revenue result will be a huge boost.
Second is the attention from management agencies, with a full view that a film is not only entertainment but also haseducational and cultural value and contributes to preserving national identity. And third, indispensable is the companionship of investors, brands and strategic partners. If there are more new investors, I believe part 2 will be deployed soon.
For now, the entire crew needs a break to recover both physically and mentally. During this time, we will continue to produce the series Trang Quynh in his silly days or other small projects, as a way to maintain the creative rhythm and continue to listen to feedback from the audience.
Different from the familiar image of Trang Quynh when he grew up and became an official, Trang Quynh the Kid: The Legend of Kim Nguu exploits the childhood of the boy Quynh, who was also playful and mischievous like many other village children, but behind that was the love for his homeland, responsibility for his family, friends and community, responsibility for his dreams and actions.
