Ho Chi Minh City's population is stable after the merger, but the birth rate is still the lowest in the country.

(Dan Tri) - After merging with Binh Duong and Ba Ria - Vung Tau provinces, Ho Chi Minh City's population reached more than 14 million people, making it the most populous city in Vietnam. However, Ho Chi Minh City's total fertility rate remains very low.

According to a report from the Department of Population and Family Planning of Ho Chi Minh City, population work in the 2020-2025 period has achieved many positive results.

After the merger, Ho Chi Minh City is still the most populous city in the country with 14,002,598 people (according to the 2024 mid-term census). The population density is about 2,067 people/km², second in the country, after Hanoi .

Despite a stable population, Ho Chi Minh City's total fertility rate in 2024 will only reach 1.43 children per woman of childbearing age, a slight increase from 1.39 children in 2022 but still among the lowest in the country.

The prolonged low birth rate has put Ho Chi Minh City at risk of rapid population aging. According to data, the population over 60 years old in 2022 accounted for 11.03% of the total population, and this trend continues to increase.

The average life expectancy of the city's residents in 2024 will reach 76.6 years, higher than the national average of 74.7 years. High life expectancy shows that the quality of health care and life in Ho Chi Minh City has improved, but also poses many economic challenges in the future.

In addition, reproductive health screening and counseling have also achieved many successes. In 2024, the rate of pregnant mothers screened before birth reached 86.6%, and the rate of newborns screened reached 83.98%.

In particular, 92.5% of young men and women preparing to get married receive information and advice on premarital health, contributing to raising awareness of reproductive health care.

The sex ratio at birth is controlled at a reasonable level, reaching 106.1 boys per 100 girls, down from 112.6 in 2021, showing that solutions to control gender imbalance at birth have been effective.

Currently, the Ho Chi Minh City health sector is making efforts to advise on policies to solve the problem of low birth rates.

Late last year, the People's Council issued a resolution regulating policies to reward and support population work, including a VND3 million support for women who give birth to two children before the age of 35. In addition, students at all levels of education in the city are also supported with free tuition.

In the Project on Comprehensive Health Care for Ho Chi Minh City residents and a number of solutions to contribute to increasing the total fertility rate in the period 2025-2030, a number of policies are also proposed to ensure that all people have access to comprehensive, continuous and quality health care services, live in a safe environment, and develop comprehensively physically and mentally.

Some notable policies include providing counseling, health check-ups and vaccinations for young people preparing to get married; supporting and enhancing pre- and post-natal screening, improving nutrition and reproductive health; enhancing psychological counseling, school disease prevention and adolescent reproductive health care...

According to a survey by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in 14 countries including South Korea, Thailand, Italy, Hungary, Germany, Sweden, Brazil, Mexico, the United States, India, Indonesia, Morocco, South Africa and Nigeria, every 5   One in 10 people believe they will not be able to achieve the family size they want. Of those, most will have fewer children than they planned, while others will have more than they want.

Young people in particular express deep anxiety about the future, with concerns about climate change, rising living costs, gender stereotypes, the housing crisis, work pressures and global instability becoming major barriers to starting a family.
