On the afternoon of July 11, Mr. Le Van Tho, Principal of Phan Dang Luu High School (Pong Drang Commune, Dak Lak Province), said that the Department of Education and Training had directed the school to verify the parents' complaint.
Previously, Ms. D.TY (whose child is studying at Phan Dang Luu High School) sent a petition requesting the authorities to verify and handle the case of two physical education teachers of the school organizing extra martial arts classes with many irregularities, causing outrage among many parents.
Phan Dang Luu High School where parents "accused" the teacher of teaching extra martial arts and collecting money against regulations
According to the petition, Ms. Y. said that these two teachers organized extra martial arts classes right in the school with a fee of 2 million VND/student/year (not including the cost of buying supplies). It is worth mentioning that if any student registers to take extra martial arts classes, they will be "specially" evaluated as passing in physical education and vice versa. Many students and parents also reported that they only need to pay money but do not need to attend any martial arts classes. Ms. Y. also said that many families with many children and difficult circumstances would have to pay extra martial arts classes, which would push them into a difficult situation.
"I am making a request to the authorities to clarify whether the school organizes martial arts classes and collects money from students. Is it correct to evaluate physical education results based on whether students register to attend martial arts classes? Is it correct to collect 2 million VND from each student for martial arts classes and other fees without a receipt?..." Ms. Y. requested in her request.
Speaking to reporters, many parents whose children are studying at Phan Dang Luu High School also expressed their indignation regarding the organization of extra martial arts classes.
A parent said that this has been going on for many years, parents are very upset but no one dares to speak up for fear of affecting their children. "I have 2 children studying at Phan Dang Luu High School so I know this very well. One child graduated and registered to study martial arts for 3 years but did not know any martial arts because he did not need to study but the purpose was to get a good grade in physical education" - this parent said.
Another parent added that his child is over 1.7m tall and has a healthy body, but in the first semester he did not register for martial arts classes, so he failed the physical education test. Knowing the incident, in the second semester he paid for his child to learn martial arts, so he passed the physical education test.
Speaking with a reporter from Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper, Mr. Le Van Tho confirmed that two physical education teachers organized extra martial arts classes in the school yard, outside of working hours.
The principal admitted that the teachers taught extra classes in the school, but the school did not direct or benefit from it.
However, Mr. Tho said that teaching martial arts and collecting money is agreed upon by the teachers with the students, the school does not direct or profit from it. After receiving feedback, the school will no longer allow teaching martial arts in the school to avoid gossip.
Mr. Tho also explained that if the scores in all subjects are good enough to be classified as excellent but the physical education subject is not good enough, the grade will be lowered by one level.
According to Mr. Tho, after receiving the petition, the school invited the students to come and clarify, but because it was summer vacation, only about 10 students came to school. In the class where the parents complained, no students came. The school prepared a form, extracted the content of Ms. Y's complaint to ask the students, some students checked "yes", some checked "no".
However, Mr. Tho said that the content of Ms. Y's complaint had many untrue issues. For example, the complaint that students who take extra martial arts classes do not need to pass the physical education test and do not take extra classes will fail the physical education test is incorrect.
"The school is continuing to verify and is expected to have results this Sunday," said Mr. Tho.
Slow implementation of the direction of the Provincial People's Committee?
On June 19, the People's Committee of Dak Lak province sent a petition and reflection from Ms. D.TY to the Department of Education and Training of this province.
Accordingly, on June 13, the Provincial People's Committee received a petition from Ms. Y. reporting that two teachers at Phan Dang Luu High School organized extra martial arts classes at the school and collected money against regulations. The Dak Lak Provincial People's Committee forwarded the petition to the Department of Education and Training for inspection, settlement according to regulations and notified the results to the Provincial People's Committee.
However, as of July 9, Mr. Le Van Tho said he had not received any instructions and the Department of Education and Training had not yet come to verify.
