The cause of 50 tons of fish deaths in Nghen River is clear.

Sea bass of people in Song Hai village, Thach Son commune died on October 6.

On October 6, in the fish cage farming area on the Nghen River, below the Do Diem wharf of the people of Song Tien village, Thach Son commune, Thach Ha district, there was a situation of 50 tons of dead barramundi.

Upon receiving the information, the Department of Fisheries sent staff to collect 3 water samples in the farming area and send them to the Northern Center for Environmental Monitoring and Aquatic Diseases (Aquaculture Research Institute I) for testing.

The results of water sample analysis show that basically the indicators in the 3 analyzed water samples all have values within the allowable limits according to QCVN 10:2023/BTNMT (National technical regulation on seawater quality), QCVN 08:2023/BTNMT (National technical regulation on surface water quality), QCVN 02-19:2014/BNNPTNT (National technical regulation on aquaculture conditions).

The cause of 50 tons of fish deaths in Nghen River is clear.

Officers of the Department of Fisheries took water samples in the area where the fish died.

However, there are 4 parameters with values that are not suitable for fish farming: pH, salinity, alkalinity and total iron.

Specifically, at 3 sampling points, salinity has a low value; alkalinity has a value lower than the allowable limit (60 - 80) by 1.11 times according to QCVN 02-19:2014/BNNPTNT; total iron content has a value higher than the allowable limit (

According to recommendations from the Northern Center for Environmental Monitoring and Aquatic Diseases, low salinity, low alkalinity and high total iron content are unsuitable conditions for fish growth and development.

High iron levels can interfere with fish respiration and cause toxicity, especially in juvenile fish. Low pH values can increase the toxicity of heavy metals.

Low pH values can increase the toxicity of heavy metals.

To overcome the situation of dead fish and stabilize production, the Department of Fisheries requested the People's Committee of Thach Ha district to direct the People's Committee of Thach Son commune and farming households to continue implementing measures to ensure production: checking and handling water environmental factors where cages are located, ensuring that environmental factors are within allowable limits; moving cages to farming areas with suitable water quality (if necessary); increasing resistance, regularly monitoring the health of farmed aquatic animals to have timely treatment measures, cleaning, drying cages, and disinfecting.

Temporarily stop fish farming activities at the present time and monitor regularly. If any unusual signs are detected in the river or aquaculture area, it must be reported to the authorities for timely handling.
