Rojo leaves Boca. |
The 35-year-old defender is on the lookout for a new club just days after the Argentine side were eliminated from the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup™. Rojo did not play a single minute for Boca during the tournament in the United States, and the Argentine side also disappointed by failing to win any of their group stage matches.
After a 2–2 draw against Benfica, Boca lost 1–2 to Bayern Munich and ended the tournament with a disappointing 1–1 draw against Auckland City, a semi-professional team from New Zealand.
The defeat will surely lead to difficult decisions at Boca, a club that has won 35 league titles and six Copa Libertadores. One of the first names to leave after the disappointing tournament was Rojo.

The former Argentina international joined Boca from Manchester United in 2021 and has made 133 appearances for the club. However, when coach Miguel Russo took over in May, Rojo was immediately dismissed from his plans. Despite having six months left on his contract, ESPN reported that Rojo was released early by Boca.
At present, it is likely that Rojo will not return to Argentina to continue playing for Boca, even though the team is in the middle of the season and leading the domestic league table. Rojo is opening the opportunity to return to play football in Europe, where he has played for Spartak Moscow, Sporting Lisbon and MU.
United spent £16m to sign Rojo from Sporting Lisbon in 2014. At Old Trafford, he was part of the squad that won the FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Europa League in his first three seasons. However, a cruciate ligament injury in 2017 saw his career decline.
After returning to Boca, Rojo won the championship with the team in 2022, making 44 appearances that season. However, Rojo fell into a slump in form and fitness, causing him to lose his starting position.
