According to semi-annual financial reports of many life insurance companies, the stock market is an important investment channel for "big guys" such as Prudential , Manulife, AIA Vietnam, Dai-ichi Life and Bao Viet.

Among these, Prudential continues to affirm its position as the most aggressive investor in the industry when by the end of 2024, the company had allocated more than half of its short-term investment portfolio to listed stocks and stocks on UPCoM, with a total value of VND 19,100 billion. By the first half of 2025, this figure increased to VND 19,438 billion, or nearly 2%.

However, the results were not very positive when Prudential's securities investment recorded a loss of more than VND291 billion, while in the same period last year it made a profit of VND719 billion. This caused the company's net profit from financial activities to decrease by 37% compared to the same period.

Prudential leads in investing in stocks

In contrast to the developments at Prudential, Dai-ichi Life increased its investment in securities in the first 6 months of the year, from VND 2,977 billion at the beginning of 2025 to VND 3,676 billion as of June 30, 2025, an increase of 23%.

Bao Viet Life also recorded a trend of capital shifting into the market. The company currently has a trust investment at Bao Viet Fund Management Company, when it spent VND 2,169 billion on stocks, 2% higher than at the end of 2024. In addition, Bao Viet also poured an additional VND 445 billion into fund certificates of the BVFED Dynamic Stock Investment Fund.

AIA Vietnam chose a more cautious approach by slightly reducing its investment in securities by 2% to VND2,362 billion. However, in the first half of the year, the company still earned VND1,874 billion in revenue from financial activities, up more than 3% over the same period.

Another player is Manulife – although it has not yet released its 2025 semi-annual report – but 2024 figures show that it is the second largest investor in the market, behind only Prudential. In 2024, the company poured nearly VND9,978 billion into stocks, up 1.1% compared to the beginning of the year. This is the second largest short-term investment in Manulife’s portfolio, behind only savings deposits.
