Preliminary statistics from the General Department of Customs show that last August, Vietnam's pangasius exports to markets reached 191 million USD, up 12% over the same period in 2023. Cumulative pangasius exports in the first 8 months of this year reached nearly 1.3 billion USD, up 9% over the same period last year. Notably, in addition to the Chinese market recording a slight decrease of 2%, pangasius exports to a number of markets continued to grow by double digits such as the US, CPTPP, Brazil, Thailand, Colombia, etc. Particularly, pangasius exports to the US in August 2024 reached more than 35 million USD, a sharp increase of 40% over August last year. August 2024 also recorded the second highest export value to the US market this year (after April 2024 with more than 37 million USD). In the first 8 months of this year, tra fish exports to the US reached 226 million USD, up 23% over the same period last year.

According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), the recovery of the US market is a lever for the growth of our country's billion-dollar fish exports, especially in the context of not-so-optimistic exports to China. Not only that, Vietnamese pangasius has also continuously received good news from the US. For example, through the bidding programs of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), it is expected that this country will continue to have demand for white fish such as cod, grouper fillets and catfish products. Therefore, our country's pangasius businesses have more opportunities to boost exports to this market. VASEP also just informed that the US Department of Commerce (DOC) has announced the preliminary results of the administrative investigation to review the anti-dumping tax order on frozen pangasius fillets from Vietnam for the period from August 1, 2022 to July 31, 2023 (POR20). DOC determined that many pangasius fillet exporters from Vietnam did not dump their products into the US market. Therefore, 8 Vietnamese enterprises will not be subject to any anti-dumping tax. According to VASEP, because the US has not recognized Vietnam as a country with a market economy , DOC uses the surrogate values of a third country to calculate the dumping margin for Vietnam. In this review, DOC selected Indonesia as a surrogate country to calculate the dumping margin for pangasius. Because this agency believes that Indonesia has a similar economy to Vietnam; significantly produces goods similar to the goods under investigation during the review period; Indonesia provides usable and reliable data to help DOC assess Vietnam's production factors. DOC will announce the final anti-dumping tax results 120 days from the date of announcement of the preliminary results. Thus, although there is no final result yet, this can be considered the best news for the Vietnamese pangasius industry after 20 years of being entangled in an anti-dumping lawsuit in the US. Currently, Vietnam is the country with the top pangasius production and export in the world. This strong fish of our country has conquered 140 markets, setting a historical record when the export turnover in 2022 reached 2.4 billion USD. With the export growth momentum in the first 8 months of this year and the optimistic forecast of continued growth in the last 4 months of the year, the target of 2 billion USD of the pangasius industry can be reached or exceeded, VASEP forecasts.
