Cesc Fabregas' Como has been making some big moves recently. |
But this is not simply the impulse of a nouveau riche. Behind it is a meticulously planned project, with solid financial resources, modern management thinking and influential names from the football elite.
Como - The Outsider's Breakthrough
Less than six years ago, Como were an obscure name floating around in Serie D, the fourth tier of Italian football. Today, they are the third-biggest spender in Serie A, ahead of Milan, Inter, Roma and Napoli.
In just six months, more than €100 million was spent on transfers - an unimaginable sum for a newly promoted club. But what's more remarkable is how Como did it: methodically, strategically and... debt-free.
Cesc Fabregas, once part of the legendary tiki-taka, is now the brains behind the Como project. Having joined the club as coach in mid-2024, Fàbregas has been a shareholder for two years.
Under his leadership, Como not only stayed in the top flight in their first season but also finished in the top 10 of Serie A - a quiet miracle. But the story here is not just about tactics or football, but also a new model of football investment.
Let's start with the money. Like any modern miracle, Como had its “magician”: the Indonesian billionaire brothers Robert Budi and Michael Hartono, the bosses of the Djarum Group, a conglomerate with interests in banking, real estate, tobacco and technology. They bought Como for a mere €200,000 in 2019, when the club was on the brink of collapse.

Now, Como's owners spend tens of millions of euros each season, without borrowing or financial constraints. According to Forbes , each person's assets exceed $25 billion - richer than most owners in Europe.
In the summer of 2025 alone, Como spent 53.5 million euros to bring in potential names: Jesus Rodriguez (22.5 million), Baturina (18 million), Álex Valle, Van der Brempt and Fellipe Jack. Before that, the winter transfer window also witnessed equally high-quality deals such as Caqueret, Douvikas and Assane Diao. In total, in just half a year, more than 100 million euros were spent - while revenue from player sales was only 4.4 million.
Is Como reckless in spending money like that? Absolutely not. They even posted an operating loss of €47m last season, but still posted a net profit of €3.3m - a smart financial move thanks to infrastructure investment and asset valuations.
The club is renovating the Giuseppe Sinigaglia stadium and building a state-of-the-art training center. This is a long-term investment, rather than the “buy a star to make a splash” style often seen in clubs lacks vision.
Como's Vision
importantly, Como's team is not just made up of billionaires. Fabregas is joined on the coaching bench by Thierry Henry and Dennis Wise in the administrative roles - men who understand top-flight football, but are also not afraid to venture into a new model of sports management.
This is what makes Como special: he does not seek to rush things, but rather persistently builds a modern football ecosystem, from the training ground to the executive room.

And Como shows no signs of slowing down. Alvaro Morata is almost certain to arrive for €8-10m. Jayden Addai from AZ Alkmaar is also on the radar, along with a left-footed international center-back. That means their framework is still being finalized, with each piece carefully selected.
From a beautiful but unknown lakeside club, Como is now the embodiment of a modern football model: lots of money, but used wisely; not chasing fame, but aiming for sustainability. And while football fans are still busy discussing the future of Juventus, Inter or Milan, perhaps they should start looking north to Lombardy - where an "outsider" project is quietly building something great.
Italian football is always in need of a breath of fresh air. And Como 1907, with both daring and awareness, are creating a special chapter in the old book of Serie A.
