Starting from 2024, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment (now the Department of Agriculture and Environment) has guided the implementation of classifying domestic solid waste at source and collecting recyclable waste at 166 preschool and primary education facilities in Vinh Linh, Gio Linh, Cam Lo districts and Dong Ha city.

Up to now, at the 166educational institutions mentioned above, the work of classifying domestic solid waste has been maintained regularly, and recyclable waste (including paper boxes containing plastic components such as milk cartons, juice cartons, etc.) has been periodically transferred to the collection unit. According to statistics, in November and December 2024, about 6 tons of recyclable waste were collected and transferred, including nearly 3 tons of milk cartons. In the first quarter of 2025 alone, about 8.3 tons of recyclable waste were collected and transferred, including about 5.7 tons of milk cartons.

According to the 2025 plan, the Department of Agriculture and Environment will develop a plan to expand the activities of classifying domestic solid waste and collecting recycled waste in schools in the districts of Hai Lang, Trieu Phong, Dakrong, Huong Hoa and Quang Tri town with a total of 139 educational institutions at both preschool and primary levels.

Exchange and develop a written agreement on the receipt of recycled waste between schools and collection units. In addition, the Department of Agriculture and Environment also supports each facility with 3 120l HDPE trash cans to store waste after classification.

Through training sessions, students will grasp the core contents of the 2020 Law on Environmental Protection, especially Article 75 related to waste classification and treatment, thereby contributing to reducing the amount of waste treated by landfill or incineration. Increase recycling and reuse of plastic waste in schools; create sources and raise funds for school activities by transferring recyclable waste to collection units.

Raising awareness and responsibility of students and teachers in environmental protection activities in general, and maintaining a clean living environment in particular; using waste rationally, economically, and limiting the generation of solid waste from studying to daily life; increasing the participation of students and schools in waste collection and recycling; creating a green - clean - beautiful - safe - civilized learning environment.

In particular, increasing the rate of waste collection and recycling, contributing to supporting localities in implementing environmental protection content in the criteria for new rural construction in the period of 2021 - 2025, component criteria 7.2 and 7.7 of the environmental criteria in the national criteria set for new rural districts in the period of 2021 - 2025.

Through students to raise awareness of relatives and families to implement criterion 7.2 with the aim of increasing the proportion of households classifying solid waste at source (≥40%); directly implementing criterion 7.7 and the proportion of plastic waste generated in the area that is collected, reused, recycled, and treated according to (≥50%).
