The Museum of African Civilizations is the national museum of Senegal, officially opened in December 2018 to promote Africa's contributions to the world's cultural and scientific heritage. The museum was conceived from the initiative of Léopold Sédar Senghor, the first President of Senegal, at the 1966 World Festival of African Art. In 2009, the then President of Senegal, Mr. Abdoulaye Wade, officially proposed the construction of the museum and the construction process began in 2013.
The museum has a total area of 13,785m2 , of which the main architecture is a 4-storey round building inspired by the traditional Senegalese water tank model. In addition to the exhibition rooms, the building includes a conference room, a 150-seat auditorium, exhibition and creative areas, and multifunctional areas.

There are currently around 18,000 artifacts on display at the museum, including historical artifacts and contemporary works. At the entrance to the main hall of the museum is a large baobab tree sculpture by Haitian sculptor E. Duval-Carrié. The museum is currently working with several European partners to collect and repatriate Senegalese artifacts.
