War invalid Luong Khuyen Giang (far left) checks the eucalyptus hill.
Born in 1950 into a farming family, young Luong Khuyen Giang joined the army in 1971. After training, he was assigned to the 17th Engineer Company, Regiment 66, Division 10, Corps 3, fighting on the Central Highlands front. While participating in the liberation of Buon Ma Thuot town, he was hit by a bomb fragment in his left arm and leg, losing 24% of his health and in 1977, he was demobilized and returned to his hometown to start a business.
Over a cup of hot tea, veteran Luong Khuyen Giang said: “At first, I bought a few eucalyptus trees, built a hut, bought cows to raise, but the income was not enough to cover my living expenses. In 1992, realizing the strength of the hills and forests, I discussed with my wife selling the cows, buying hills along Thac Ba Lake, planting forests to develop the economy . Along with farming, I set up nets to raise fish along the lake.”
Determined to develop the family economy, he and his wife cultivated and cared for the barren land, turning it into a comprehensive farm from planting forests to raising cattle, poultry, goats and pigs. However, difficulties still abounded. At times, due to lack of experience in raising livestock, especially in disease prevention, he suffered losses... In 2008, a big flood caused the water level of Thac Ba Lake to rise... all the fish were swept away. "At that time, I invested 25 million VND, of which 15 million VND was borrowed from the District Veterans Association, and lost everything," Mr. Giang said.
Promoting the qualities of Uncle Ho's soldiers, determined to overcome difficulties and rise up, Mr. Giang explored a new direction. In 2016, realizing that the commercial fish farming model was not effective, he switched to the fishing service model - a hobby loved by many people. From this model, the service fish pond earns about 90 million VND each year.
Thanks to his constant efforts, he now has a comprehensive farm with nearly 7 hectares of planted forest, 1.2 hectares of fish ponds and livestock and poultry. Each year, after deducting expenses, he earns 200-240 million VND. His family's life is increasingly prosperous.
With the spirit of pioneering and exemplary, striving to do business, war invalid Luong Khuyen Giang also actively participates in social work. He is the head of the Veterans Association at the grassroots level, always receiving the love of members and people, as well as recognition and rewards from superiors with many certificates of merit. In 2016, he received the title of "Excellent Farmer".
