On the afternoon of June 8, Mr. Nguyen Van Duong - Chairman of Cam My Commune People's Committee - said that in the near future, the locality will prepare a dossier to request the competent authority to recognize the ancient banyan tree in Quoc Tuan village (Cam My commune) as a heritage tree.
According to Mr. Duong, the banyan tree in Quoc Tuan village is about 300 years old, and the locals also built a temple to worship the village's patron saint.
The banyan tree is so big that many people cannot hug it at the base, about 40m high, and its canopy provides shade over a large area.

According to the elders in Quoc Tuan village, during the war against France and the US, the banyan tree was a safe haven for wounded soldiers and civilians. The large, dense branches of the tree shielded our troops from enemy aircraft attacks, becoming an effective shield to protect the fighting force.
During the fierce war years, under the banyan tree, many emotional farewells took place when the children of the village set out to defend the Fatherland.

Nowadays, the banyan tree is a place where many people rest every summer afternoon, and is also considered a sacred place to pray for a peaceful and lucky life when about to leave their homeland.
Local people hope that the local government will soon make a dossier to propose this as a heritage tree so that the community can further appreciate, care for and protect this treasure.
