Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên25/06/2023

Talking to the doctor, the patient said that at noon that day, he ate rice with a type of red mushroom bought at the market (photo). About 4 hours after eating, the patient had a stomachache, had frequent loose stools, and felt tired.

At the hospital, test results showed that the patient had electrolyte disturbances, acute kidney failure, and signs of liver cell damage. The patient was diagnosed with mushroom poisoning and treated with active intravenous fluids, multi-dose activated charcoal, and electrolyte replacement. Based on the patient's image, doctors thought that the patient had eaten poisonous russula mushrooms. This type of mushroom has a similar shape to red rotundus, an edible mushroom, so people can easily confuse it. This is the second case hospitalized in the Intensive Care - Anti-Poison Department in recent times, due to mushroom poisoning bought at the market.

According to Lang Son General Hospital, Lang Son is a mountainous province with many types of mushrooms growing, making it difficult to distinguish between them. Meanwhile, wild mushrooms are foods with a high risk of causing poisoning. People who eat poisonous mushrooms often have symptoms of abdominal pain, nausea, and dizziness. In severe cases, they often have difficulty breathing, vomiting, diarrhea, gradually leading to kidney failure, acute liver failure, which can cause rapid death if not treated promptly.

To avoid mushroom poisoning, people need to distinguish between types of mushrooms and how to identify poisonous mushrooms, and use mushrooms with clear origins. Do not use mushrooms if you do not know exactly what type or the origin of the mushroom. When eating poisonous mushrooms and seeing symptoms of poisoning, people need to go to a medical facility immediately for timely emergency treatment to avoid unfortunate consequences.
