The need for traffic accounts
From October 1, according to the new regulations on unified traffic accounts for the non-stop toll collection system (ETC), which will take effect nationwide. If the VETC account or other toll collection accounts have not been upgraded to this format, vehicle owners may be refused to pass through the station.
Previously, the non-stop toll collection system in Vietnam was operated by many providers such as VETC and ePass. Although more convenient than manual toll collection, having multiple separate accounts was inconvenient: vehicle owners had to manage multiple wallets, top up money individually, and often encountered problems when passing through incompatible stations. This wasted time and affected traffic.
To overcome this, the Ministry of Transport has implemented a comprehensive solution: the formation of a unified traffic account. This is a unique identification account for each vehicle, linked to vehicle owner data, allowing seamless payment across all non-stop toll stations.
Instructions for upgrading VETC account to traffic account
For vehicle owners who already have a VETC account, upgrading their VETC account to a traffic account is very simple and can be done online. Here are the detailed steps:
- Step 1: Log in to the VETC application, select Upgrade account.
- Step 2: Check the information again and click the Upgrade button
- Step 3: Enter the OTP code sent to the login phone number
- Step 4: Enter new password and press Continue
- Step 5: Link VETC wallet and bank account: Go to Payment Link section and add bank card information. The money account part in "VETC Wallet" needs to be identified as the new traffic account, and the part displayed in "Traffic Account" is the amount according to the old payment method that will be gradually deducted until it is used up and no longer used.
All VETC or ePass vehicle owners, need to urgently upgrade their VETC accounts and switch to traffic accounts.
