Tay "flower" in Thuong Bang La

Ha Anh Thu, born in 2010, a Tay ethnic female student in Thuong Bang La commune, brought great joy to her family, teachers, and friends when she became the valedictorian of the entrance exam to grade 10 at Lao Cai Province's Ethnic Boarding High School. Throughout her studies, Thu has always been diligent, studious, and humble, becoming a shining example for many students in the highlands to follow.

We went to Trung Tam village, Thuong Bang La commune on a summer afternoon. In a small house nestled in the mountains, Ha Anh Thu was still surprised when recalling the moment she learned she had passed the exam as valedictorian.

With a bright smile and eyes sparkling with happiness, Thu shared: “I just thought I had enough points to get into school, but unexpectedly I got 9.25 points in English, 9 points in Math and 8.25 points in Literature and became valedictorian. When my dad called to tell me the score, I burst into tears and ran out to tell my mom, my hands still shaking.”

Ha Anh Thu is a student at Thuong Bang La Primary and Secondary School. During her 9 years of school, she has been an excellent student, doing well in all subjects but has a special affection for Literature. In 8th grade, Thu won first prize in the district-level Literature competition for excellent students; in 9th grade, she continued to win the district-level Encouragement Prize in this subject.

Thu said, for her, Literature is not only a simple subject but also a source of spiritual nourishment, helping her understand more about life, people and society.

I like reading literature, poetry and newspapers. Reading a lot helps me gain more knowledge, expression and perspective on problems. When studying Literature, I often ask myself “why”, “what would I do if I were that character”. I don’t go to extra classes because my house is far from the old district center, so I only study in class according to the school’s curriculum. In class, I pay attention to the teacher’s lectures, go home to review and do all my homework. In the evening, I study for about an hour and then rest. In the morning, I wake up at 4:30 to study because at that time my mind is clear and I absorb quickly.

Sharing more about her study secrets, Thu said she divided her study plan into smaller parts for each subject. For Math, she practiced many types of questions, took notes on the types of questions she often made mistakes to avoid repeating them. For English, she arranged time to memorize vocabulary, practice listening, and practice communicating with teachers. In particular, Thu always spent time talking with teachers and friends to expand her knowledge. She believes that when she shares and listens, she will understand the problem deeply, remember it for a long time, and have broad social knowledge to be more confident in the exam.

Not only is Thu a good student, she is also a good child, diligently helping her parents with housework. The family has two sisters, the younger one is still young so Thu always tells herself to be more mature, helping her parents with small tasks such as washing dishes, sweeping the floor, doing laundry...

Mr. Dang Anh Phuong, Principal of Thuong Bang La Primary and Secondary School, said: Anh Thu is a good student, self-disciplined, quick-thinking, always attentive in class. The most valuable thing about her is her modesty, always knowing how to share knowledge with friends, asking questions when she doesn't understand and not being afraid to speak up. In this year's 10th grade entrance exam, Thu became the valedictorian of the provincial Ethnic Boarding High School. That is a worthy achievement for her years of hard work.

When asked about her future plans, Thu smiled, her eyes shining with hope: “I dream of becoming a Literature teacher. I want to teach children in my hometown, so that they can understand literature, love literature, and live more emotionally and humanely.”

For Ha Anh Thu, being a good student is not just about getting high scores but also about having goals, dreams and knowing how to live a decent life.

“I think that being a good student without knowing how to love others is meaningless. When I grow up, I want to be able to help ethnic minority students in mountainous areas like my teachers have helped me now.”

In Thuong Bang La, Ha Anh Thu - a Tay ethnic female student with a simple yet great dream has become an example that inspires the determination, aspiration and belief of generations of students in the highlands.

Leaving Thuong Bang La commune, on the winding slope in the midday sun, we still remember the image of Ha Anh Thu - the valedictorian with clear eyes, a gentle voice and the aspiration to become a village teacher. Today's achievement is just the beginning but we believe that on the journey ahead, Thu will continue to rise and reap success.
