Online fraud is becoming an increasingly serious threat to Internet users in Vietnam. According to the Ministry of Public Security , more than 6,000 online fraud cases were detected in 2024, causing financial losses of more than VND12,000 billion. Fraud is becoming increasingly sophisticated, with nearly 70% of Vietnamese people having received at least one fraudulent call or text message each month.
Online fraud can lead to serious consequences such as loss of money, personal information being stolen, bank accounts being compromised and many other consequences. Fraudsters take advantage of users' ignorance to appropriate property or harm personal identity.
According to the Department of Cyber Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention, in addition to tricks such as fake emails, scam calls and fake websites, there are 7 common forms of fraud today, including: fraud impersonatingeducational institutions, fraud in recovering suspended capital, payment for services, online shopping and travel, impersonating police officers, prosecutors, courts, emotional fraud for financial gain and investment fraud through fake platforms.
The Cyber Security Department believes that the main reason why online fraud continues to grow is due to a lack of awareness and security knowledge in the community. This emphasizes the importance of equipping people with basic knowledge to identify and prevent fraud.
To deal with this problem, the campaign “Preventing online fraud - Safer with the Ministry of Public Security and Google” will provide people with knowledge, tools and solutions to prevent online fraud, including 8 educational videos , each one minute long, with the participation of experts from Google and the Department of Cyber Security.
These videos will highlight seven common scams, providing helpful tools and tips for prevention. More than 200 YouTube creators will participate in the campaign, sharing information about cybersecurity and raising awareness, especially among vulnerable groups such as seniors.
In addition to educational videos, the campaign also includes practical security tools. Google Play has integrated a Government App Authenticator, making it easier for users to identify and download safe apps and avoid fake ones. Google Play’s anti-fraud protection has helped stop more than 4.5 million installations of suspected malicious apps on more than 1 million Android devices.
Google’s “Validate Government Apps” initiative has helped verify more than 110 government apps, protecting users from fake apps. Google also offers protections like two-factor authentication (2FA), which helps users protect their personal accounts from being taken over.
Through this campaign, Google and the Ministry of Public Security hope to help Vietnamese people confidently use the Internet without worrying about the risk of online fraud, while creating a safe and trustworthy online community.
