After nearly 40 years of being associated with the Windows operating system, the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) error message is about to be replaced with a new design called "black screen". This is part of Microsoft's plan to improve the error warning system on Windows 11.

The BSOD error message is one of the most familiar icons to Windows users, appearing when the system encounters a serious problem and is forced to restart. However, in the upcoming Windows 11 update, Microsoft will completely change this design.

The new error screen ditches the traditional blue background, emoticon faces, and QR codes, replacing it with a simple black background with more clearly displayed technical information. The new interface appears to be similar to the screen users typically see when Windows is in the process of updating.

Notably, the new error message will directly provide the stop code and the driver name that caused the problem. This makes it easier for administrators to identify the cause without having to extract files and analyze them with specialized tools like WinDbg.

“This is an effort to provide more clarity, to help us and our users understand the root cause of the issue and fix it quickly. It also helps to better distinguish between errors from within the Windows operating system and errors caused by external components,” David Weston, corporate vice president of operating system and enterprise security at Microsoft, told The Verge .

Microsoft said the new BSOD design will be implemented in the Windows 11 update, which is expected to be released later this summer. Along with that, the software giant also introduced the Quick Machine Recovery feature, a tool to support the rapid recovery of devices that cannot be booted after a crash.

The changes are part of a plan to improve the resilience of the Windows operating system, after a problem involving CrowdStrike software last year left millions of computers globally in an error state.
