9-year-old boy suffers acute kidney failure after being spanked on the buttocks by his mother

VnExpressVnExpress26/05/2023

China Xiao Wu, 9 years old, living in Zhejiang, suffered from acute kidney failure and was unable to urinate normally after being spanked on the buttocks by her mother.

The patient was admitted to the hospital in a state of physical exhaustion, with no strength left, and was diagnosed with acute kidney failure, which could have affected his life if not treated promptly. Currently, Tieu Vu is being treated at a dialysis center and has overcome the critical stage.

The cause of the boy’s kidney failure was that his mother often beat him with her hands or a broom handle on his buttocks. Tieu Vu’s mother said that he was stubborn by nature, refused to admit his mistakes, and did not cry after being beaten. At first, the mother only beat him with her hands, but later switched to using a broom handle.

The doctor said that many parents think that spanking a child's buttocks is safer than other parts of the body. But in fact, this is wrong. If the child is spanked frequently, the skin will become congested, affecting the excretory function of the kidneys. In severe cases, it will lead to acute kidney failure like Tieu Vu. If too strong, spanking the buttocks can also indirectly damage the child's brain.

According to doctors, some children with acute kidney failure may be due to parents beating them too hard, causing muscle tissue to become necrotic, the body to produce large amounts of myoglobin, potassium ions and other substances. Acute kidney injury occurs due to bleeding. This condition is similar to rhabdomyolysis.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a condition in which the kidneys suddenly stop working, leading to complete kidney failure. This condition is often a complication of another serious illness. This type of injury is more common in older adults.

If not treated quickly, the body will accumulate abnormal levels of salts and chemicals, affecting the ability of other organs to function. If the kidneys stop working completely, the patient may need to use a dialysis machine for the rest of his or her life.

Symptoms of acute kidney injury include fatigue, diarrhea, dehydration, decreased urination, confusion, and drowsiness. Most cases of acute kidney injury are caused by reduced blood flow to the kidneys. Causes include low blood volume after excessive vomiting or diarrhea; or the heart pumping less than normal due to heart failure, liver failure, or sepsis.
