On August 10, US time, the New York Times, Financial Times and Bloomberg News reported on an unusual agreement in the field of international technology trade. Accordingly, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang met with US President Donald Trump at the White House last week and agreed to donate a portion of revenue to the US federal government .
The news comes as Nvidia is caught up in trade tensions between China and the US, two giants competing for dominance in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) chip manufacturing.
Investors are betting that AI will transform the global economy . Meanwhile, Nvidia is the world's leading semiconductor maker and became the first company to reach a market value of $4 trillion last month.
The US has restricted the number of chips Nvidia can export to China on national security grounds. Last month, Nvidia said the Trump administration had approved the company to sell a weaker version of its H20 chip to the Chinese market.
However, it was only after Mr. Huang's meeting with Mr. Trump that the US Department of Commerce began granting licenses to sell chips to the company.
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), a Silicon Valley-based company, will also pay 15% of revenue for sales of MI308 chips in China, which were previously banned from exporting to the country.
According to the New York Times , this deal could bring the US government more than 2 billion USD.
The move comes as the Trump administration is imposing tough tariffs on partners to address trade imbalances, bring manufacturing back to the US and pressure countries to change their policies.
Among them, a 100% tariff on many imported semiconductors took effect last week, with exceptions for tech companies that agree to make major investments in the US.
