On August 25, startup technology company Perplexity AI announced that it will deploy a search revenue sharing model with media units, marking an important step in reshaping the relationship between artificial intelligence (AI) and the media industry.
According to Perplexity, media partners will begin receiving payments when their content is used to generate answers for users through the company's browser or AI assistant.
In a blog post, the Perplexity team said the company will implement a more sustainable and equitable model for original content providers such as newspapers, news sites, and magazines.
Specifically, the payments will be made through a subscription service called Comet Plus, which is expected to launch in the coming months, a program that Perplexity claims is aimed at ensuring journalists and media organizations benefit from new business models created by AI.
According to the company, a fund worth $42.5 million has been set aside to distribute to content providers and this number is expected to continue to increase in the future.
Perplexity representatives emphasized that as the Internet evolves from an information-providing platform to a place to connect knowledge, action and opportunity, high-quality content from publishers and journalists becomes increasingly essential.
The Comet Plus service will cost $5/month and will be included as an add-on for users who have subscribed to Perplexity's premium plan.
Perplexity is currently one of the most prominent startups in Silicon Valley, considered a potential competitor that can shake Google's dominant position in the search field thanks to advanced AI technology.
However, the company is also facing many legal lawsuits from major media corporations such as the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and Yomiuri Shimbun (Japan).
The lawsuits allege Perplexity illegally used copyrighted content to train and power its AI engine.
One of the lawsuits alleges that Perplexity “unlawfully copied and reused” content from the Wall Street Journal and the New York Post to create AI responses without permission.
The revenue-sharing move is seen as an “olive branch” that Perplexity has offered to ease tensions with media organizations, while strengthening its defense against copyright infringement allegations.
Unlike tools like ChatGPT or Anthropic's Claude, Perplexity provides clearly sourced answers, allowing users to directly access the original documents to verify information.
What's special is that Perplexity displays answers directly on the interface, helping users not need to access the source website like with traditional search engines.
Meanwhile, Google has also integrated AI into its search system, providing AI summaries for query results, a trend that is changing the way users access information./.
