During excavations in Colima, Mexico, archaeologists from Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) discovered a strange and mysterious stone structure. Photo: @INAH.

This stone structure is actually a basalt volcanic rock map dating back to between 200 BC and 200 AD. Photo: @INAH.

This 1.7-meter-high map rock lies on an axis that is angled about 20 degrees to the northeast and points toward the Colima volcano, about 14 kilometers away. Photo: @INAH.

Extensive archaeological exploration and research has shown that this map stone represents the territory of pre-Columbian indigenous people living around Colima, represented by small circular features carved right into the stone, indicating the location of ancient settlements. Photo: @INAH.

The rock also features carved holes representing villages, as well as lines that may relate to topographical features and natural hydrological systems. Photo: @INAH.

Archaeologist Julio Ignacio Martínez de la Rosa reports that some of the features depicted on this map stone also correspond to the actual geographical landscape of the southern slope of the Colima volcano, with ravines and rivers clearly visible. Photo: @INAH.

“There is no doubt that this stone map has helped us better understand how the pre-Columbian indigenous people who lived around Colima managed their land,” added Julio Ignacio Martínez de la Rosa. “Moreover, this map stone was also a way to preserve knowledge from generation to generation, at a time when writing did not yet exist in the ancient Colima territory.” Photo: @INAH.
